Brax - one of the best newcomers in a long, long time,
By David Malmgren (San Diego) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thru (Audio CD)
My brother gave me this disc for Christmas. I had already downloaded all of the available songs off of MP3.com. This is one album where if you are not hooked the first time around, you will definitely be hooked the second or third time. The composition and melodic properties of this group are outstanding. This is one group that will rocket to stardom given the opportunity. I would wholeheartedly recomment this album to anyone that enjoys acts such as the Police and other lightly reggae-influenced artists.

The only thing bad about Brax is me singing along...,

This review is from: Thru (Audio CD)
Brax's debut is a refreshing digital platter released in the midst of a stagnant music scene. I don't know about you, but I've grown weary of the mindless pap served daily on today's commercial rock stations. I'll admit that when a friend from San Diego told me about this band, I was a little skeptical; after all, what was the last good group to come from down there? Ratt comes to mind--but then again I said GOOD band, didn't I? So I downloaded 3 or 4 of their songs from MP3.com and was absolutely shocked: these guys weren't just good, they were excellent! I had to get the CD. By the 3rd time hearing Thru in its entirety I was hooked. There isn't a bad song on this disc, and I don't say that just because it's the only cliche that comes to mind--I actually mean it. The only thing bad about Brax's music is the sound of me singing along to it in my car. I would give the disc 5 stars, but that's what everybody does who writes reviews for Amazon; I'm trying to give potential fans an honest, objective rating, and 4 stars is pretty good for a band that is just getting started. Now, I don't like to compare one group to another and say, "They sound like this _____", but for those of you who want a reference point before buying the CD, I'll give a list of what I perceive to be Brax's influences(or at least bands with the same musical mission): Collective Soul, John Mellencamp, Bob Marley, U2, Sting, Gin Blossoms, Del Amitri, Johnny Cash, Barenaked Ladies, Joan Biaz, The Cult, The Doors, Wallflowers, Steely Dan, Jeffrey Gaines, Roxy Music, Lothar and the Hand People, Sonia Dada, Adrian Belew, Bruce Springsteen, Curtis Mayfield, Tom Petty, Traffic, Third Eye Blind, Jimmy Cliff, Tito & Tarantula, Daniel Lanois (I think you're getting the idea). But don't misunderstand me, Brax is a true original in the wake of a music scene that is at it's lowest creative point since the mid-eighties. Buy 2 copies of Thru and give one to your local Top 40 radio station. Say that you're just giving them a glimpse of what everyone will be playing in the near future anyway, so why not get in at the very beginning? You'll be glad you did.

It's not just because I've had the pleasure to know these guys, or because I sat thru hours of rehearsals and studio time, it's because of the talent, passion, and drive of these musicians that this is one of my favorite cd's ever and I still sing Surprise Party when I'm in the shower. On stage and in my headphones, Brax shines!

Refreshing Alternative!,

Great album! I have played with Brax in the past and have seen him perform live in his solo endeavors. You see and hear him put his heart and soul into the music he composes and performs. Don't listen to the one bad review here (fenrisbooks), Brax's musical influences, as far as artists and musical genres, are far and wide and this is reflected in the music he writes. It's a refreshing break from all the commercial radio where everyone is trying to sound like everyone else. Pigeon holing him into a "souless rendition of Hootie" is a tasteless excuse for a review.

This is the kind of CD that leaves you wanting more. It contains strong melodies, excellent musicianship and thoughtful lyrics.I have owned this CD for a few months and with time it has gotten better and better.I also had the chance to see Brax perform live at the Coors Amphitheatre in San Diego where they put on an amazing live show. If you like Sting, U2, Dave Matthews and Peter Gabriel and if you can recognize great music when you hear it, then this is a band that you will love.

Bad Music,

This review is from: Thru (Audio CD)
This is bad music Do not buy this I have written two reviews for this product before. They have not posted. Do not buy this album. Think Hootie and the Blowfish - with less soul. Empty, sad, and stuck in San Diego. This is the world of BRAX!
