This product was perfect for my application, I did not have cross bars on my 2003 Mercades ML350 roof rack. The 5401 Snowcat did not require them, it saved me $300.00 from my Dealer. I have never installed anything like this before and it only took 15 minutes.

Installed on a 2004 Volvo XC90. Works as promised. Can carry 6 pairs of skis, 4 snowboards or combination. Install was easy...took a little while to figure out the instructions. Used Youtube to find a video and then everything was smooth! Totally recommend!

I bought this for a 2008 Ford Escape with regular side rails. Assembling the parts before attaching it to the SUV was pretty simple. The instructions were detailed enough and there weren't that many parts to make it confusing. Attaching it to the SUV, on the other hand, was not as pleasant. The allen key provided can only turn 1/4 to 1/3 a revolution at a time, making the process slow and painful, especially when done with your bare hands outside in the middle of the winter.

I was a little wary when attaching it to my SUV. It didn't seem like the clamps would hold firmly, but after tightening each side enough, they stayed in place. I probably over-tightened them, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I put it to use for the first time carrying four snowboards from Boston, MA to Bretton Woods, NH, and it did its job. I did notice not all the snowboard bindings could fold down far enough to prevent from touching the roof when face down. Despite this, I couldn't hear anything from the roof when driving on the highway and there weren't any scratches afterwards.

For the price, I'd recommend this as long as you only intend to carry skis or snowboards.

The installation was fairly simple, even though the instruction is a bit difficult to decipher (mostly small pictures -- international language, I guess). It provides 2 keys, which adds another degree of convenience. On my ML430, it is high enough that a pair of ski have enough clearance when they are paired back to back (the flat sides facing each other). That means it really holds 6 pairs of ski.

Construction is sturdy enough that I don't have any issue with it. I also don't hear any wind noise at all. Other than the installation instruction (or lack thereof), I see no issue at all, even for someone who is only slightly mechanically inclined.

Of course, this is straightly for ski or snowboard only. This setup cannot be modified to hold a cargo bay or a bike rack later, unlike some of the more basic cross bar setup. The ski rack is part of the cross bar and cannot be taken off. I have compared the alternatives and this is the most cost effective for my current usage -- "ski-only".

I bought this item through LL Bean because of an online sale they were having. We managed to get three pairs of skis and a snowboard from Virginia to Mont Tremblant, Quebec - and back - a total of 12 hours driving each way. No damage was done to the skis and the rack was convenient for throwing skis on for the five minute drive to the base of the slopes. Because of all of the snow we have been getting the roads were coated in salt so the gear needed a quick rinse off upon arrival to get the salt off, but otherwise no problems.

In the interest of full disclosure, my partner and I have 83 mm and 88 mm width skis and with those widths we could only fit two pairs of skis on each section. I suppose if you are still using traditional, narrow east coast skis then you could fit six pairs but I think it is a more realistic advertisement to say up to four pairs of skis.

It took about 30 minutes to install and fits great on our Mazda CX-5. Definitely glad we made the purchase.

Bought this while browsing around for $$$ crossbar + rack solutions. This is a solution that is all-in-one. Note that this will not work on cars without roof rails.

I have a 2014 Subaru Forester with roof rails and installing was easy. Follow the included instructions, don't work in the dark like I did, and you'll be good to go. This rack indeed carries four snowboards (two on each side). Note that I purchased this after the snow season and looked kind of stupid driving around with four snowboards on my roof, but the rack passed the drive around test with flying colors.

Note that each rack has a lock, so you'll have four locks to contend with. That may be a drawback or a benefit depending on how you look at it. There's also a tool included for assembly purposes, so you won't need a toolbox to help you with the installation.

I'll update this upon next snow season to see how it holds up against a snowstorm of sorts. So far, so good, and for the price....it's tough to beat.

This carrier works well with the factory rails on my 2003 BMW wagon. A nice Clean install. The carrier holds my skis and poles firmly. and the locks on all 4 corners are keyed alike and easy to use. The initial set up was a little bit of a pain, but taking them off and putting them back on should be a snap going forward. I am surprised that haven't noticed any wind noise. I would recommend these

Instructions are mediocre - search on Youtube for how to install this, to supplement them. But it's a great rack as long as the only thing you want to carry is skis or snowboards.

Purchased to go on top of my Land Rover. It was easy to put together, was easy to install, and looks great on top of the Rover. Let it snow!

The instructions were very clear and I assembled the unit in a few minutes in the house before I took it out to the car. The unit was very stable on the roof rails and did not cause any strange wind noises on the roof of the vehicle. The connection points protected the rails from scratching. I did not use the allen wrench that was supplied and was the issue in some reviews. It would take a lot of small turns to tight up the rack with the angled wrench. I had a screwdriver like tool that was long and accepted screwdriver like bits. I had a 6mm hex head bit in the screwdriver tool and put the rack on the car in about 5 minutes. If the screwdriver handle is too big, it won't fit though the angled hole in the bracket and will hit the flexible areas where the skis rest. This is a high quality unit and will last for years.
