Installation on factory roof rack is very user friendly; dial type clamps are easy to position correctly and hold very securely. Box is very stable even at highway speeds--no vibration or rattling and relatively minor wind noise. Dials for clamps infringe a bit on interior box space but convenience of the clamps makes the tradeoff worthwhile. Will hold 3 to 4 pr of alpine...

3.0 out of 5 stars Thulel cargo carrier
I really like this product but probably expected too much out of it. On a long trip from Florida to Virginia it rained continuously and when we got home I discovered that it was not as waterproof as advertised. Rain water had accumulated in the lower back portion of the Thule. Ten hours of steady rain is probably too long a trip in constant rain to expect that no water...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product!, October 18, 2008

I purchased the Thule Rooftop Cargo Box after seeing them on so many vehicles on my travels across the U.S.. The 603 Ascent 1500 was selected as the size and shape fit my camping needs to a "T". Once I received it and opened the box I was skeptical as it is very light, but feeling confident with the numbers of them in use, I mounted it to my 2001 Subaru Outback. Wow! Easy and Quick! No brainer there! Then it was off to Washington State an over 2100 mile trip.

Well, I am back and only have enthusiastic phrase for this fabulous cargo box! High winds at 75 mph and rain didn't phase it one bit! As far as my gas mileage, I really think it increased! I get 25 mpg normally and I averaged just over 24 mpg! That includes going through the Rockies several times and the high wind on the nose driving! I don't believe I did that well without it. This is a Great Product and I am sure you will be pleased as well! Purchase it, you won't regret it! Amazon gave great service and shipping!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and fast to install, loads of space, free shipping best deal around, February 24, 2009

Well worth it for the extra space or skis and boards. Out-of-the box had it on my Nissan Pathfinder in 5 minutes, great latching design. My guess is that it will fit almost all autos with cross bar roof racks. Loads of space, does seem a but long, the 1600 is a bit shorter and might look more proportional to my Pathifinder, this 1700 is probably best for the Tahoes, Escalades, and Yukons out there. In any case, awesome product, and Amazon has the best price and arrived (via some shipping company, not UPS) in about three days, pretty fast. No shipping issues for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thule 604 Ascent Top Carrier, September 2, 2008

I just used this carrier on a 1600-mile round trip from northern Illinois to North Carolina (on a 2005 Astro Van). On the return trip (September 14), we went through extreme hurricane force winds (aftermath from Hurricane Ike) of 75 MPH from all directions in Louisville, KY. The wind downed trees on the interstate, but the carrier held firmly and no rain entered despite an incredible amount of buffeting due to the winds. I was concerned that the sideways and up-and-down effects of severe buffeting might loosen the grips on the crossbar, but the grips were as tight when I arrived home as they were when I left home. I saw two top carriers that had separated from their vehicles and had been run over on I-65...that's how bad the wind was.

When I first got it it fit up well, but one of the saddles that sits on the cross rail broke. I called Thule customer service and they were very nice. They immediately sent four new saddles and said that I must have received one of their earlier units that had substandard saddles. They apparently discovered this recently and were very accommodating. I appreciate their fine customer service, although I am glad I had time to get the saddles before my trip. Suggest that you make certain that you have the most recent saddles.

Shipping service and tracking through Amazon was great, and the price was the best I could find!Thule 604 Ascent 1600 Rooftop Cargo Box (Black)

5.0 out of 5 stars No brainer!, June 22, 2009
This review is from: Thule Ascent Cargo Box (Sports)
This cargo box provides everything you need for a summer vacation. Space, lightweight, portable, durability, easy locking, and easy to attach to the roof.

I have mine on a Chrysler Town and County and it fits perfectly. You will need to pay special attention to the rear gate. But, once you open the gate all the way, you can adjust.

The top lid is a little lighter than expected so closing can be tricky. Once you get it down and understand that the two locking mechanisms need to be free and clear, its easy.

It is easy to attach to the roof of my Highlander and only took a few minutes.I like the access from both sides. We packed luggage for five for a long weekend on our first use.It worked great.I did use every cubic foot of space. As always I was thinking I should have gotten the bigger one.I looks good on the car as far as coolness can go with a cartop carrier.

The cargo box was delivered several days earlier than expected. It was super easy to install. If you plan to install one of these, first measure the distance between your cross bars before you hoist the cargo box to the top of the vehicle. The mounting hardware inside the cargo box does adjust a little bit, but you may need to reposition your own cross bars first, as I did. Aside from that, super easy installation, was ready to use within 15 minutes. Don't try to go through an automatic carwash with one of these on your rig or you may be sorry! (I didn't, but met someone who forgot theirs was atop their vehicle and was told it ripped the darn thing off along with their cross bar. Not good!). The locking mechanism to the cross bars works well and the cargo box is easy to open, close and lock. I suggest you mount it to one side or the other on the top of your vehicle and not in the center position for ease of loading/unloading. No problems, no complaints, am happily satisfied with this purchase.

Mounted on a 2003 Toyota Sienna. Very easy to mount and unmount with the built-in clamps. Very secure. Have used it on a number of trips with no problems. I love that you can open it from either side.

Excellent box, gr8 price this thing is awesome!! don't let it's light weight fool you. It's sturdy and water tight. Not that much wind noise to speak of on the highway, but life is so much better with it I wish I didn't wait so long. My advise to anyone contemplating this box/purchace....do it. You will not regret the choice, plenty of room to store anything and above all, you won't have projectiles (skiis, boots etc.) launched thru your vehicle in case of an incident on the road. End result awesome box love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great storage option for road trips!!, January 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Thule Ascent Cargo Box (Sports)
I used this on top of our 2008 Subaru Outback. It looked great and provided plenty of storage space for a cross country trip. Make sure you purchase Thule (or Yakama) cross bars as the Subaru crossbars only support up to 100lbs and this box is 45lbs itself, leaving very little weight for any items inside it. We were able to load it up with a big duffel bag full of clothes, computer bag, gifts, diapers, pack-n-play, and some extra snacks as well as a few emergency winter clothes in case we were to get stuck somewhere.

Even with that box we averaged around 25mpg for the cross country trip (Idaho to Virginia). There was no wind noise and it fit perfectly.
