Thule's 9001 Raceway Rear Mounted Bike Rack is an innovative, effective product when it comes to mounting bikes securely to a vehicle. This benefit, however, comes at the cost of damaging your vehicle. The rack rests on either the rear lip or trunk of most make and model vehicles, but the cushioning is not sufficient to prevent DENTS IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. I'm still trying to work out this issue with Thule, and I anticipate they will pin the blame on operator error. However, I am a cycling and automotive enthusiast who always carefully follows directions.

Thule's bike rack is, indeed, impressive, but it's a "no go" if you love your car more than a bike rack.

I've owned Thule products in the past and have had great luck... but not so much with this rack.. the build quality is great, but the bottom support bracket needs a different design to prevent denting on some cars. I installed this on my 2011 BMW 3 series and put my 30lb bike on it (just one bike), drove about 15 miles to and from the bike shop. When I removed the rack, I saw that it had put two big dents on my rear bumper where the lower support piece is installed.. I have experience with racks and did not install it too tight/incorrect/etc. I'm sure this would work fine for some other cars, but NOT a BMW 3 series.. returned to Amazon.. and now I have to pay a dent guy to come fix my bumper.

New for model year 2011 is the Thule raceway 2 and 3. I purchased the Raceway 2 from Niagara Cycle works because they are offering the model for $ 197 ($230 is the normal retail) with free shipping and no tax. Decision to buy online is a no brainer. Package arrived comprimised but goods were intact. Bike rack is incredibly easy to use and locks in place to prevent theft. I have used the rack several times and it is solid for what appears to be mostly polymer construction. Rack folds easily and stores in truck when you do not want it in the way or to prevent theft. One could purchase a cheaper bike rack for a fraction of the cost, but Thule has a reputation for quality products and has impressed this customer. I do not believe I will need another bike rack soon but when the time comes I would purchase another from Thule.

Pros - Incredibly easy to use.
- Folds when not in use.
- Fast setup (can mount on a car in a few minutes, takedown in seconds)
- Has locks for both bike and car (to prevent someone from jacking the actual rack).

Cons
- Lock works however for the price paid it should feel more study. Key seems like it might break under heavy stress.
- Rubber molds can be ripped off if not careful, but would take some effort.
- Price; not actually a con but I feel the price will scare potential customers from purchasing this hassle free bike rack.

This bike rack is a "no-brainer" for those who don't want to hassle with straps and figuring out how a bike rack will fit on their car. Super easy to set it up on the car and get your bike strapped-in and be on your way to do some riding. Great sturdy design, unlike some of those tube-style racks you see out there...however, it does weigh a little bit more than those other racks. But if you want something that's built to be sturdy then you'll really like this rack. It's become a permanent fixture on my car because I use it pretty much every day, but if you want to take it down, it's really easy to unlock the straps and reel everything back into the unit, fold it up and stowed away for storage.

Installation was a breeze with the rack. Instructions were in clear English and illustrated to help those who need that visual aid. I was worried about the pads being abrasive against my car's paint, but it seems to be good. I'll update once I take it out for a few times. I have a Toyota Camry and yes I do care about the paint of my car and didn't want to buy a rack that would damage my car.

It looks great and works perfectly as described. Happy on the price too.

Check out the picture I uploaded if you want to take a look at how it looks.

3000 mile round trip with 2 road bikes at 85mph and we couldn't be happier. It took me about 3 minutes to figure out the install and another 3 minutes to load up the bikes. The rack holds extremely steady with virtually no movement from the bikes and requires little, if any, tightening once underway. Just as other user mentioned, we did have some damage to the lower bumper, a slight indention and a little peeling of the clear coat, but I don't hold that against this product. Really its just the ABS plastic bumper that was the issue and its hardly a problem. As for the trunk lid, there was absolutely no damage or markings at all. The color of the product is slightly misrepresented in the pictures - its more of a flat, colorless black composite than a shiny black color. Again, this is no issue for me, just not exactly what I expected. I will say, I'd guess this product could easily be painted to match your vehicle if you really wanted a cool, custom look. One other unexpected issue was the loss of MPG. We were driving a Honda Civic that regularly gets 30+mpg and that fell to 25-27mpg. Once more, no issue with the product, just something to be aware of for those on a longer drive.

On the whole, this rack is super easy to use, looks a LOT nicer than other racks, heavy enough to feel solid, light enough to store with ease. Over he course of our 3000 mile journey, I took this on and off 6 times and I never begrudged doing it. I would highly recommend this bike rack to anyone that asked.

Tips: Make sure the points of contact are clean before putting the rack on. This will ensure no dirt gets trapped and acts like sand paper once moving. Use small bungies or velcro straps to secure your front wheel from spinning and one more to secure the pedals of the two bikes to each other so the cranks don't turn. The security cable is a very nice touch that I would have no problem trusting for cross town and short stops, but I still added a standard, coated bike cable to secure it to the rack to feel more comfortable stopping overnight as the provided cable could very easily be cut with a small bolt cutter. Load your heavier bike on first to reduce the leverage placed on the rack. Take a short test run before going a long distance.

The Thule 9001 construction is great, setting it up was a breeze and it has not scratch my trunk yet. I clean the contact point on the trunk and put a extra layer of wax over it.Most likely I will purchase a 3M edge tape to protect the trunk edge. Overall, great product, good packaging, and so far it been stable up to 75 mph.

I spent a lot of time reading everything I could about the different bike carriers. In the end I felt it was worth spending the extra money. This is a very secure rack. It fits perfectly onto my car (2012 Ford Fusion). I am always concerned about a big bump in the road knocking the rack loose and my bike flying in to traffic. My fears are wiped away with this rack. The cables are far superior to nylon straps. The locking mechanism is excellent. It is a little heavy but that does not really bother me. My only complaint is the the cable they provide to lock the bike onto the rack only works if you are carrying 2 bikes. I am most often carrying only one. Over all I am extremely happy with this purchase and recommend it highly.

Coming from what was literally the cheapest trunk-mounted bike rack at the time, this is a massive upgrade for me. I've used it with a '99 Ford Mustang (with spoiler), a 2001 Honda Civic (also with spoiler) and a 2007 Toyota Camry (no spoiler) and it works fabulously with all of them. No dents to speak of. Highly recommended.

Pros:
- Easy to load bikes, and they will attach very firmly
- Anti-sway bars work well
- Folding, locking, adjustment mechanisms are all very sturdy
- Retractable cables make it easy to store
- Has not yet damaged any of my cars
- Locks to your car, locks bikes
- Very minimal bouncing when going over bumps and whatnot

Cons / Notes:
- Doesn't lock bike wheels in place, someone could still steal those
- Only locks the right side of the cable system, so although someone couldn't casually steal it, they could unhook part of it
- Only locks the outermost bike, which is only really a problem if you find a way to put the inner bike on the rack such that it can be removed without removing the outer bike... I'm not sure that's possible.
- Quite heavy for carrying around
- Bulky and blocks a decent amount of view, but then again the bikes block a lot more
- Looks like it is going to dent your car (you'll be able to see the rear hood depressed where it hits), but it's not permanent

I bought this Thule 9001 Raceway 2 Bike Rear mount and have used it for less than one month. I thought this was a great product and I like the straps that hold the bike on the rack but the cable that tightens on the the car will not tighten anymore...it is "stripped" and will not tighten. Paid over $200.oo and my $35.00 one works much better. This is something you need to buy a bike shop so you can make an easy return. It should have a warrenty. Return policy is only partial refund and then I have to pay shipping.
