Product Description

Amazon.com

The Thule Vertex hitch mount bike carrier transports between two and five bicycles (depending on the model chosen) securely at the rear of vehicles, while allowing access to rear doors by leaning the unit back when not loaded. The carrier is conveniently compatible with 1-1/4" and 2" hitch receivers. Additional features include: an arch design for easier bike loading and carrying performance, increased mast height, Thule Hold Fast cradles and anti-sway cages, the ability to fold arms down flat, bike and rack security from theft with locks (sold separately), and an integrated carrying handle.

Multi-bike Hitch Receiver Carrying Capacity

The Thule Vertex hitch rack carrier is designed for frequent cyclists and/or families that want the stability, and functionality of a hitch receiver carrier that can be left on vehicles without interfering with hatchbacks. The Vertex is compatible with 1-1/4" and 2" hitch receivers, and has a multi-bike carrying capacity managed by its two arched bike support arms. The naturally supportive arch design of the bike arms allows for easier bike loading and carrying performance. Thule Hold Fast cradles are installed on the arms. They feature a soft, single material cradle with a groove design that accommodates bike cables, cushions bikes and secures them during transport. In addition, straps used in cradles are 25% stronger than current Thule T3 straps. To provide maximized bike stability, bike arms also feature anti-sway cages. Anti-sway cages are rigid rubberized bike rack components that attach to the lower edge of the bike arm, hanging below the bike cradle (one for each bike). As the top tube of bike frames rest on the carrier arms, the anti-sway cages attach to the vertical tube section of bike frames with included straps. This holds bikes firmly in place without the need of a heavy wheel tray sometimes used on hitch mount carriers. Bikes can be locked to the carrier with a cable lock (sold separately), and the carrier can be locked to a vehicle hitch receiver using a hitch receiver lock (sold separately).

Access to the Rear of Vehicles

The Vertex ensures easy access to hatchbacks is available through its leaning functionality. and improved hitch switch. With a pull of the lower release of the two-part hitch switch, the upright mast of the Vertex leans to the rear of the vehicle. Leaning functionality is best used when the carrier is unloaded to avoid unnecessary strain on cradles and no-sway cages. The upper release lever of the hitch switch controls the ability to fold bike arms down into a vertical position when the carrier is not loaded. This minimizes the possibility of driving and parking issues when the empty carrier is left on a vehicle.

About Thule

Thule was founded in 1942 by the Thulin family, when Eric Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a pike trap he designed and began to sell in Scandinavia. It wasn't long before he added other practical items to the company's portfolio. By the 1960s, the company began to concentrate on car-related products, including its first roof rack. The Thulin family sold Thule to the publicly listed company Eldon in 1979, and it has continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions ever since. The Thule Group is a world leader in providing transport solutions for an active life.

I talked to Thule about the Amazon comments, specifically the rubber straps that rip. Their response was "The straps are the same design, but use a different rubber blend. There was an initial version where we had an issue with some of the straps, but that has been resolved". I then asked how I could identify the old design versus the new design, their response was "when you get it check to see if the manufacture date is after June 2012. If it is then you're good! There will be a sticker on the box and product with serial number and production date"

Here is what I was looking for in a bike rack:
1. The ability to easily mount and carry Full Suspension bikes as well as Road Bikes.
2. Security in knowing that the bikes will not fall off at 65MPH.
3. Theft Prevention features.

1.Thule generally makes a fine product. I have been very impressed with the craftsmanship of a Thule products overall. But this rack just does not cut it. I purchased this rack to transport my full suspension mountain bikes. I was in a rush, needing the rack the night before a trip. At REI the salesman stated that it would work fine for full suspension mountain bikes. IT DOES NOT WORK FOR FULL SUSPENSION BIKES. So needless to say it was a struggle to get the bikes on the rack and an even greater struggle to get them off. Mounting the bikes onto the rack required removing the air from the tires. Can you spell BUMMER?

2. This rack requires the use of rubber straps to secure the bike to the racks. The straps have holes so you can wrap them around the frame and secure them onto a plastic pivot on either side.
However I must have pulled the strap too tightly because when I arrived at my destination, 2 of the four straps were split up the middle and one was broken in half. I found this to be a bit unnerving, considering they were holding $5,000 worth of bikes on a six hour trip. On the return trip I mellowed out and only one broke in half. In fact if it was not for the very long cloth strap they include that wraps around the bikes and the mechanism itself, the bikes might have fallen off on the first leg of my trip. (Maybe that is why they include the cloth strap, it seems like a quick-fix afterthought. It seems out of place with the rest of the product.)

We are a family of five (2 adults, 3 kids) and we all ride bikes, so we needed a 5 bike hitch rack. This one is top notch, high quality, easy to install and use. A couple of tips after using it for about a month are #1) If you have a very small child's bike it likely wont be able to sit on this rack because the top tube needs to be a certain length to go over both of the rack's poles that extend horizontally. It shouldn't be a big deal because if the bike is that small, there's a good chance you can squeeze it into your trunk or somewhere in the vehicle. Soon, my youngest child will grow into a larger bike and we'll be able to use all 5 spaces on the rack #2) I am going to invest in a Locking Hitch Pin, which you can find on Amazon for about 30 to 55 dollars. The reason is that we took our bikes on a 700 mile trip and the stock bolt that is used to secure your rack to your hitch actually loosened up by the time I arrived at my destination. There is a lock washer that comes with the rack, but apparently that wasn't enough to keep the bolt fully tight for the entire journey. This is a well built piece of equipment though and made our road trip a lot more enjoyable because we were able to go bike riding after we arrived at our destination. I would highly recommend this to anyone that has a need to transport five bikes. And if you are planning on traveling long distances, invest in the Locking Hitch Pin.

I love this bike rack. It works perfectly with my 2" reciever. It was super easy to assemble for the first time and installs and comes back out in under a minute. It has two release handles. The first allows the arms that actually hold the bike up to tuck away when not in use and come up when needed. The second handle release down by the hitch allows the rack to lean away from the car giving me more then enough space to open my cargo area and either load or unload cargo. The rack itself has a nice heavy feel to it that makes you think that it's gonna last. I paid the premium for the Thule Lock Cylinders to give me a little piece of mind that when I come back out to my car that the bike rack is still going to be there.

* 1 1/4 inch install is what my intent was for one car, with the option to intall on other car which is 2 inch.
* Solid construct, loose installation.
* The receiver install bolt did not go all the way through with no nut required, wierd. Bolt should be longer, with a nut.
* Rubber straps will definitely go bad over time, should be nylon or something else.
* When simulating braking, there is a 1/8 inch gap that will rattle inside the bottom housing that will create a "CLANK" noise.
* Inconsistent plastic shapeing, will warp over time in the sun.
* Did not snugly fit inside the receiver, which will create another "CLANK" sound. It it will rattle on non smoothe roads.

** Not for Mountain bikes, unless you have a extended bar thing.

Good design intention, bad little design things that will make you regret the expensive purchase.
I expected more.
Returned.
