I just purchased this item and had to return it. It does not fit my 2000 Beetle. There is no lip over the rear window on my car to secure the bar. It was easy to return, Wish I had known it doesn't fit my car.

This fit my 2001 VW New Beetle perfectly. I suspect it's just a standard Thule rack that's been rebranded as a VW specialty rack and packaged with VW-specific instructions, but in any case it does the job. The instructions are a little confusing at first. After blundering around a little bit, though, I figured things out.

The front one clamps to the roof rails inside the doors, while the rear one just clamps to the little tiny lip of roof rail above the rear windows (because of course there are no rear doors on the Beetle). I was skeptical of this arrangement at first, but once I had them clamped on I tried shaking the rear one loose, and it stayed put. I then fitted the racks with Thule bike holders and transported two bicycles on a round-trip of about 300 miles, including a stretch through crosswinds from the edge of a tropical storm. Nothing budged.

Given the ridiculously tiny interior space in the Beetle, I anticipate getting a lot of use out of these.
