5.0 out of 5 stars groovyjazzyfunkynaaastyyy!, May 6, 2000

Anything with joey porter is a killer.....have been seeing him for years now as the "funk-hub" of "Rubberneck"......and then caught the Porterhouse at Squirell's in Corvallis last year......Da Bomb! An extremely talented quintet (and believe me, these white boys CAN FUNk! ) playing with a soul-based virtousity that propels each track firmly rooted in jazz. So glad that they released this album....Hope to spin it on my jazz show at KBVR FM.........If Joey and the boys read this, please send us the copy at the radio station (OSU's KBVR). And keep the music going! P.S....For those not familiar with these Portland funkateers, remember "Galactic" , "Greyboy Allstars" , "20th Congress" , "Medeski, Martin & Wood".........

I first saw Porterhouse at the Aladdin Theater in Portland, Oregon, where they were opening for Maceo Parker; I ended up liking them more than Maceo! These guys had me from the first few notes of "Thumbs Up", which they opened with. Now, see, I'm a drummer, and I have a hard time dancing because I am usually too busy analyzing hemeolas and grooves and whatnot, but I couldn't help but dance myself silly. As others have said, it is obvious that they have serious jazz training and chops (just like yours truly - we know our kind when we see/hear them!), but they don't let that work against the fatness of the groovesmanship. The intricacy is still there, and that's what keeps them from being a 'jamband' - they have tight transitions and unison figures that hook you...HARD.

I can't recommend this album enough, along with another release of theirs, "Prime Cuts". I bought both, and neither can seem to find their way out of my CD player now. Yup - it's THAT good. Hope to see them playing together again real soon. (You hear me, Joey and Josh? DO IT. And drop me a line if Brian's not up for it another round - I'd gladly come play with you at the drop of a hat!)

I just picked up a couple of copies of Portland's coolest funk/jazz band's eagerly anticipated lp at the CD release. I had pretty much worn out the bootleg I made last December at the Tabor Pub. The Porterhouse Quintet will definately rock you til dawn. The cd sounds tight and displays the bands range from funky stylings to jazz passages. It features some covers as well as a bunch of Porterhouse originals. . . If you go to the show be sure to give a shout out to Sean Foote for one of his patented "Bass Solos".

5.0 out of 5 stars Hippies love the Funk, June 15, 2001

I recently went to an all day funk fest in Long Beach. Porterhouse started the day out with an impressive bang. It was the first time I saw the band live, and I was surprised to see how much the hippies love the funk. They just cant stop dancing. I thought I was at a Fish or GD show. I am a pretty much just an enthusiast of great musicians, especially in classical jazz. These kids kick, spin, and bounce through an obvious jazz education, and suit the tastes of any lover of music. Whether you love music for the talent, the mental escape(trip), making your car shake, or just for dancing, you will dig Thumbs Up.
