About the Author

Andrea Wulfing Van Ness, a former thumb sucker created the Thumbuddy To Love books along with their matching thumb/finger puppets to help children stop thumb sucking in a fun and positive way without shame. Her grandmother made her a thumb puppet at age 6 and she was so excited, she stopped thumb sucking in a day! Inspired by this early accomplishent, she wrote all the Thumbuddy To Love books that accompany adorable thumb/finger puppets. Her third book, The Binky Fairy debuted in March 2011 to help pacifiers suckers let go of the pacifier gently. Her books have won a Mom's Choice Award and a PTPA Award (Parent Tested. Parent Approved).

I recommend it for 3-5 year olds...maybe up to 6.

"Fred" seems rather large and cumbersome to wear on his thumb, and too small to carry around like a toy--so he usually just ends up getting lost.

I am glad to have made it a month sometimes things can be so difficult to deal with - I was glad to find this simple tool to help us.

Thumbuddy works! My son who is 4 really related to the fireman hero in the book and he took the thumb puppet to bed. For potential buyers out there, this is really a great product but you cant just give it to your child and expect it to work... you have to read the book, encourage your child to be involved and use the sticker chart to motivate your child to quit. It is a great positive teaching tool that helps them give up thumbsucking which is a comforting habit. I recommend it for 3-5 year olds...maybe up to 6.

What a relief to find this product! I did NOT want to use that horrible-tasting thumb paint I remember as a kid to stop thumb-sucking or the sock with duct tape that my dentist recommended (can you imagine doing that!?). My son loves Thumbuddy Fred! The story and illustrations are really cute - they remind him of all the other things he needs his thumbs for rather than sucking. I heard him "reading" the book to his Fireman puppet yesterday - and we've already had two days without any sucking during the day. I couldn't be more thrilled!

I never expected that having my child stop sucking his thumb would be such a challenge. Finally with the help of Thumbuddy he hasn't sucked his thumb in a month. I had tried every trick that everyone suggested and they all bombed. With Thumbuddy I had patience and Fireman Fred seemed to be able to distract him from getting the thumb in the mouth when the urge presented itself. I am glad to have made it a month sometimes things can be so difficult to deal with - I was glad to find this simple tool to help us.

This was a real find for me and my child. I tried EVERYTHING and this is the only one that worked. My little boy has not sucked his thumb for over a month and loves his Fireman Fred puppet and book so much that he says 'Mommy, I won't ever suck my thumb again so Fireman Fred will always be proud of me!'! Great idea and adorable product.

Fireman Fred to the rescue! This thoughtful product has been a wonderful, positive teaching tool for my son as he started Kindergarten. He was immediately captured by the puppet and story and learned to break his habit quickly and in a healthy way. I have been a vocal supporter ever since!

I chose this book over others because the description says it comes with a reward chart/stickers. I was expecting a pull-out chart of some kind and stickers to go with it. This book is very small, the chart is on the last page after the story and is tiny - not something I'd tear out and hang up. It did not come with stickers but instead suggests you draw stars on it or find stickers yourself. Story and concept are ok, but a larger chart that is more exciting and fun stickers would be more effective. Also, the last few pages in the book are completely blank.

The puppet is cute, and so is the book, but I think it would work better for a younger kid. My son (age 5) thought it was kind of silly, and didn't like how he couldn't pick things up while wearing the puppet (not a problem with the product; that's just what happens when you wear a puppet on your thumb). We'll try a simple piece of string when he's ready and see if that works. :-)

More About the Author

Andrea Wulfing Van Ness created and wrote the books, Thumbuddy To Love-Fireman Fred and Thumbuddy To Love- Ballerina Sue to help children stop thumb sucking in a gentle way. Her newest book/product is called Thumbuddy To Love- The Binky Fairy. A former thumb sucker herself, she created Thumbuddy To Love books and thumb puppets to help children wean from thumb/finger sucking and pacifier sucking in a fun and positive way. As a child, she remembered her mom putting the bitter nail polishes which never worked (and has harsh chemicals) and it was her grandmother who made her a puppet with interchangeable clothes to put on her thumb. In one day, she stopped. Inspired by this positive teaching tool, Andrea wrote the adorable story books that come with success charts and stickers to inspire kids to stop thumb sucking and pacifier sucking. Each puppet is interactive and matches the characters in the books to help children grow up to be big boys and girls. Her books/products have received a Mom's Choice Award, a PTPA Award (Parent Tested, Parent Approved) and a Family Review Award.
