Book Description

May 25, 2005
The heroes who never die! Though the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents had a relatively short life during their initial run in American comics during the 1960s, you just can't keep a good team down, as evidenced by their periodic revivals over the years. This is the authorized, and definitive, book on the history of such memorable characters as Dynamo, No-Man, Lightning, Andor, the Iron Maiden, and all the other super-heroes and super-villains created by the late, great Wallace Wood and company. To celebrate the team's 40th anniversary, included are interviews with Woody's creative team, as well as those superb writers and artists involved in the various T-Agents resurrections over the decades, and a detailed examination of the origins and exploits of the characters themselves, including the shocking truth behind the first super-hero to ever be "killed," Menthor, the master of mental force!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Among the publishers cashing in on the mid-1960s superhero craze was upstart Tower Comics with T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, about a team of superpowered spies (the title was an acronym, like U.N.C.L.E. in The Man from). The series lasted only three years, but the heroes, created by comic-book legend Wally Wood and drawn by such top artists as Spider-Man cocreator Steve Ditko and E.C. veterans Reed Crandall and Al Williamson, proved durable enough that several small-time publishers resurrected them in the 1980s and '90s, though with scant success. Fans fondly recall the original stories, and that presumably prompted this exhaustive compendium that includes interviews or profiles of every writer and artist who tackled the characters, a checklist of all the stories, copious artwork (much previously unpublished), tribute drawings by the alt-comics likes of James Kochalka and Jay Stephens, and two never-before-seen stories by fan favorite Paul Gulacy. If some may feel too much attention is given to the series' various, misbegotten revivals, major emphasis is definitely laid on the title's original incarnation. Gordon Flagg

4.0 out of 5 stars For THUNDER Agents Fans, January 10, 2009
This review is from: The Thunder Agents Companion (Paperback)
Long time comics fans will remember the THUNDER Agents, who spawned from the auspices of Tower Comics with such artists as Wally Wood and Mike Sekowsky doing the honors. THUNDER was The Higher United Nations Defense Enforcement Reserves, inspired by the James Bond and Man from UNCLE crazes, and the book shared such traditional super-hero characters as Dynamo, NoMan, Lightning, and Menthor, with the Blackhawk-like THUNDER Squad. Contributers to this Companion from TwoMorrows Publishing include Dan Adkins, Dick Ayers, Len Brown, Mike Esposito, Chic Stone, Dave Cockrum, Steve Englehart, Keith Giffen, Jerry Ordway, and George Perez. The book covers not only the original run of THUNDER Agents which began with the November 1965 issue and includes the mid-70s reincarnation as "Wally Wood's THUNDER Agents" and other appearances. Serves as a great companion to the two volumes of THUNDER Agents archives issued by DC.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Thunder Agents Companion (Paperback)
Okay, I'm not the best person to give an objective review. I've been a HUGE THUNDER Agents fan since I first found out about them in the early 1980's. However, this book does a great job of covering the original run of the Agents book's as well as the revivals and "almost" revivals.
