1.0 out of 5 stars Earthquakes, Government Overthrow, and a nice pair of...., April 29, 2003

This review is from: Thunder in Formosa: A Mick Pierce Spy Thriller (Paperback)
I purchased this book for a flight back from Taiwan to the US and found that it was perfectly suited to reading on an airplane-entertaining, and an easy read which did not challenge me in a jet lagged state. I enjoyed reading about the places I had just visited, although reading about those places, and the nice people of Taiwan, being the victims of a terrible disaster and humanitarian crisis was a lot less fun. The author made many mentions of how male characters managed to scope out breasts peeking from blouses, bras hanging on clotheslines and trapping men as they flee their pursuers, skimpy bathing suits, and well oiled but less well covered bodies; this sophomoric aspect of the book was less titillating than it was inspiring of the thought that the author is at least a tad on the immature side. It is written as if the author hopes that this one will be his big break for a "screenplay" which might explain some of the breast and bra narration described above. Despite these digs, I admit that I enjoyed the book and think that for a light reading mystery fan, and for someone who enjoys thinking about Taiwan, its a pretty good book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Moans, Groans, and Political Bones in Formosa, April 29, 2003

I bought this book for a trip to Taiwan, as I like to read fiction set in the place I am visiting when I travel. The book is great for the goal of killing time while traveling or having some light reading while settling down to sleep. Its not the kind of valuable book, by contrast, that you would mind leaving in a hotel room either, if you need to lighten your load. This mystery is fun to read, and is certainly worth taking on a plane as it is totally readable, even with jet lag fatigue. It has a lot of discussion regarding breasts, bras, oiled near-naked bodies, and other stuff of sophomoric fantasy, making one wonder about the maturity of the author. It reads a little bit like a movie script, and one also wonders if the author hopes to hit the big one and get a screenplay out of this someday. Despite these jabs at the book/authors underlying pschological health, I still enjoyed the book, as it was fun to have a mystery set in a place I was visiting and becoming familiar with. It was a bit sad, though, to think of the beautiful island I was visiting suffering a great humanitarian crisis as described in this mystery.
