Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Ex-Moldy Peaches singer/songwriter Kimya Dawson is most widely known for the Grammy nominated, Platinum selling soundtrack for the movie JUNO. Kimya's new solo album Thunder Thighs has major and minor themes including oceans, cancer, transgendered heroes, feeling safe in your own skin, saving public libraries and making big albums in a small, familial way. The album features guest performances by rapper/producer Aesop Rock plus members of the Strokes, Mountain Goats, and more. Thunder Thighs is self-released on Kimya's own Great Crap Factory label.

''Kimya Dawson may have the most earnest voice in indie rock.'' - SPIN (7/10)

''Thunder Thighs is a mix of the infectiously fun (Dawson raps about Judy Blume in The Library) and the achingly sad (Walk Like Thunder, a mournful yet determined 10-minute epic about the death of her friends). Fans won't be disappointed by the release'' - METROMIX

''...it's good to have her back.'' - FILTER

''Thunder Thighs' guest list is so vast that she probably needed to get a few more cases of Jameson to keep the party going. Nikolai Fraiture from the Strokes, John Darnielle from the Mountain Goats, a couple of weirdly named choirs, and Aesop Rock are sharing the sound space with her.'' - BROWARD PALM BEACH NEW TIMES

''Although the personal touch of Kimya's delicate strumming and the crackling of her soft voice still sit forefront, the backbone is a more mature solid arrangement that supports her powerful poetry.'' - GLIDE MAGAZINE

A veteran of the scrappy anti-folk circuit, with stream of consciousness songs that balance the caustic and the childlike... --NY Times

Kimya Dawson straddles the line between precious and profound. --Rolling Stone

Listening to this record, it was like being in a time machine. Some songs reminded me of "My Cute Fiend Sweet Princess," while others took me to "Remember That I Love You." Not to say that there is nothing new or fresh about this recording. .My favorite songs are "All I Could Do," and "Year 10" almost brought me to tears. It's a lovely record that I'm sure all Kimya Dawson admirers will enjoy. Respectfully, I much prefer and enjoy the stripped-down, acoustic version of "All I Could Do" as is heard in her video featuring the chickens, than the one that is featured on this album. It would be fascinating to hear these recordings with only her voice and her guitar. Nevertheless, thank you Kimya for this great collection of good songs. I am happy to add this album to my library of Kimya Dawson records.

Kimya Dawson's offering here continues her work of managing to convey self-deprecation along with valuable insights that come from constant soul-searching and self-evaluation. Kimya is all of us, or at least someone we know and love, and her personal growth and healing insights are universally applicable to all non-Cylon humanoids. This album has a theme of mature respect for everyone, as we all are dealing with issues of insecurity, self-destructive behavior and existential crises.

Musically the album both continues Kimya's hallmark of low-fi, simple melodies and the occasional use of discord to make songs that feel simple, but upon continued listening reveal layers of complexity. Lyrically there are stories cleverly interwoven with double and even triple entendres throughout.

Kimya manages to tell us all that she loves us and that we are all loved while still conveying enough rebelliousness to tell you off if you don't like what she has to say. She makes you feel like she is a good friend of yours, and for that I am greatful.

Kimya, remember that I love you! ;) Keep up the great work. You are growing at the perfect pace and your musical legacy is an excellent and non-threatening body of work for any person in mental/spiritual suffering to listen to, take comfort in and gain healing insight with.
