4.0 out of 5 stars German band with a Swedish sound
1998's Thunderbeast was the second full-length album from German metallers Night in Gales. Despite hailing from Germany, Night in Gales (at least on their earlier albums) played melodic death metal in the same vein as Swedish trailblazers At the Gates.

You won't find a lot of Dark Tranquillity-style keyboards on Thunderbeast, or Soilwork-style clean vocals...

3.0 out of 5 stars Grows on you
I just bought this CD and it just keeps growing on me. They are a crazy german band that try to clone the swedish sound - but they're actually really good at it. Highly recomended band - check out the nailwork CD and you can download the new EP from their site for free.

4.0 out of 5 stars German band with a Swedish sound, June 5, 2006

1998's Thunderbeast was the second full-length album from German metallers Night in Gales. Despite hailing from Germany, Night in Gales (at least on their earlier albums) played melodic death metal in the same vein as Swedish trailblazers At the Gates.

You won't find a lot of Dark Tranquillity-style keyboards on Thunderbeast, or Soilwork-style clean vocals either. What you will find is a fast and furious (yet still melodic) death metal assault that is sure to please fans of Hypocrisy, early In Flames and of course At the Gates. I suppose they should lose some points for the general lack of originality, but the songs on Thunderbeast are so good you can easily overlook that.

Like In Flames, Night in Gales would go on to incorporate some nu-metal elements to their later albums, but you don't have to worry about that with Thunderbeast. It's a great album for anyone who likes their death metal to be both vicious and melodic. It's also something of a "bargain bin" regular, so chances are you'll be able to score a relatively cheap copy.

Do you like "In Flames"? Do you like that Gothenburg sounding death metal? If you said YES, then this cd's for you! One of the best heavy hitting, brain crushing, growling vocal death metal cd's....PERIOD!

Hey, what can I say? Buy it, put it in your car's CD player, open the windows, and crank it up as high as it can go! Blow the roof off!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Swedish...err, German melodic death metal, June 27, 1999

I have seen them often described as In Flames clones, and they do have that "Gothenburg sound", but this album is actually quite original. The lyrics in particular are quite different from any I've seen.

Very good melodic heavy metal. Ranges from great guitar solos to amazingly ear peircing vocals. A must have for any fan of German metal.

This is certainly one of the best Metal albums that I have ever heard. I'm not familiar with other recordings by this band, but if they are anything like Thunderbeast, I would certainly buy them all. This is one of the few instances where all the songs on an album are of the highest quality. A true masterpiece.

This CD is not bad at all ,i was just expecting more since from a Swedish Death Metal band. Thunderbeast may grow on you but at first its not that enjoyable and nothing really catches the listeners attention. I recomend Night In Gales - Towards The Twilight first and then give Thunderbeast a try but don't expect to blown away by the CD.

night in gales r a great band...& that goes without saying. the music is very cool....& very melodic....& it looks loke these guys were maiden fans...coz there is a touch of maiden in their riffs. songs like "intruder", "from ebony skies", perihelion...makes this album a must buy for black metal fans.
