Book Description

Aircraft of the Aces October 30, 1998
The US aviation industry produced three great fighter designs to equip its burgeoning army air force during World War 2, and of this trio, Republic's P-47 Thunderbolt was easily the heaviest. Powered, crucially, by a turbocharged Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine that produced 2000 hp, the first production fighters reached the 56th FG in June 1942, and six months later the group joined the Eight Air Force in Britain. The arrival of the first P-47Cs in mid-1943 addressed the problem of the aircraft's short combat radius, as this model could be fitted with an external tank. Slowly, as combat tactics evolved in units like the 56th and 78th FGs, pilots learnt how best to fly the Thunderbolt in order to effectively counter the more nimble Luftwaffe fighters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book every thunderbolt fan shoul read and look, July 6, 2000

This review is from: P-47 Thunderbolt Aces of the Eighth Air Force (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No 24) (Paperback)
This book keeps on with the excellence "The Osprey Aircraft of the Aces" series have us used to. It has a detailed historic account of the missions and the everyday living of these intrepid pilots of the US Air Force since their arrival to Europe with the "jub". It complements these accounts with excellent photos of those days, and perhaps more important, with detailed profiles of the aircraft, the way they where painted and conditioned for the war. Over all, this is really great book, every aviation fan should read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but lacked 'wow', December 26, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: P-47 Thunderbolt Aces of the Eighth Air Force (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No 24) (Paperback)
This book is about famous aces of the 62nd FS/56th FG. Like Hubert 'Hub' Zemke, Rober S. 'Bob' Johnson, Walker 'Bud' Mahurin and a few more. With first hand accounts with Fw-190s and Bf-109s and how the P-47s 'bagged' them.
I only give this book a four star instead of the usual five because the book didn't deliver a complete satisfaction that other books did for me. I would not say it's a bad book, but it's not up the the other 5 star books Osprey's published.
If you want to read about 'Hub' Zemke, 'Bob' Johnson, 'Bud' Mahurin and a few more, then buy this book. But don't expect a wow out of this.
