Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book would certainly appeal to teenagers. The language is inviting without being intimidating. Jeremy's voice rings true as it highlights his passion for music...The story deals with teenage angst without being corny or superficial." (Resource Links 20040901)

"Choyce creates a book in which the plot starts quickly and the reader is instantly attached to the main character...Any teacher or librarian who works with reluctant readers should definitely include this book." (VOYA )

"The story line is well peppered with tension and action. The subject matter and brusque style of presentation may also help to invite teen readers to turn off the rock music and pick up the book. Recommended." (Canadian Book Review Annual )

"Jeremy is a believable and multidimensional character - mature, thoughtful and not always predictable in his actions...The power of the story lies in the depiction of a young man making his own decisions and taking responsibility for the consequences." (CM Magazine ) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Time management for teens, May 1, 2011
Part of the Orca Soundings series, the book is written at a level accessible to most middle school students and is an excellent resource for ELL and struggling readers. Jeremy lies about his age when his band gets a job playing at a club, and he lies to his parents when they question where he is spending his time. He decides to quit school because he can't keep up with his schoolwork after playing at the club until 1am; he then moves out of his childhood home. A good choice for teens struggling with how to fit school and activities into their time-limited life.

A Kid's Review
I liked this book because it is something that you would want to know, so you don't try it yourself.
The character's name is Drek, a boy who always pretended to play the guitar in his bedroom. One day his dad caught him pretended playing the guitar. His dad went out and bought him a used guitar. He loved it but when when his instructor told him that he should play country, he went out and sold his bike, CD and everything that he owned and got a new electric guitar. After a few months, he saw an ad that said "need new guitar player." He thought, hey I've been listening to rock for years and playing for a while, so he called them. Lying, he said he had played for years. They told him that he had the job, and to be at the Thunder Bowl tomorrow night at 8:00 sharp. The next day he went to the Thunder Bowl. The guy who owned the van was driving told Drek come up front and drive. Drek stuttered, "I ca't drive" They thought was 19 but he was only 16. He did not know how to drive. He was going well until he had to switched gears. Then he was having problems. He was swerving trying to switch gears. Next there was a stop sign and he did not see it until the car in front of them stopped. He slammed on the brakes. Drek turned so he would not hit them. They waited a while, everybody sat back in their seats again. They got there right on time almost late. They played for a while and then everybody went home except for Drek. He stayed with Suzanne. She knocked some sense into him. She told him that he should stay in school and not mess up his life. She told him that once he graduates, then he can stay up late and start drinking. Do you think that he will listen to Suzanne or not. Read Thunder Bowl By Lesley
