Editorial Reviews

The original Rankin-Bass ThunderCats (1985) was a toy-based sword-and-sorcery program created for US syndication. For the new Japanese version (2011), the characters were redesigned--to match a new line of toys. Lion-O, the heir to the lost kingdom of Thunderra, and his friends Tygra, Panthro, Cheetara, Wilykit, and Wilykat continue their search for the magical "power stones" that will enable them to reestablish the feline realm and defeat the evil Mumm-Ra. The storyline zigs and zags erratically, undercutting what should be an increasing sense of urgency. Mumm-Ra regains the powerful Sword of Plun-Darr in episode 21, but instead of using it, he disappears. The next episode focuses on the silly misadventures of Wilykit and Wilykat in a canine city, where they obtain a magic bag Doraemon might envy. When Mumm-Ra reappears he doesn't use the Sword, but turns himself into a monster that looks like one of the clumsier Hollows in Bleach--and is defeated by the giant bug that pulls the wagon of a huckster who sells a poisonous elixir. Although the series was made in Japan, the look of the characters, the fragmented narrative, and the very tame battle scenes all feel like an American series from the not-so-good old days of He-Man and She-Ra. ThunderCats ends in the middle of the story, as Cartoon Network ordered only 10 episodes, and its future remains uncertain. (Not rated, suitable for ages 8 and older: minor violence) --Charles Solomon

5.0 out of 5 stars The Final Chapter? I Hope Not! October 2, 2012
I wasn't aware that the last half of the season had even aired due to the Cartoon Network not promoting the move to Saturday mornings, where it should have been placed in the first place. I just happened to stumble upon "The Birth of the Blades" one Saturday morning.

I grew watching the original series, which can never be replaced, but the new ThunderCats has surpassed all my expectations for a remake. It has great writing, a talented voice-cast, and colorful animation. Unlike the original that mostly focused on Lion-O, the new incarnation has allowed episodes to focus on the other characters, giving them more depth.

I enjoyed watching this two discs set. My favorite episodes from Book three would have to be the two-part finale "What Lies Above." Unfortunately, the season ended in a cliffhanger and the Cartoon Network didn't order a second season. The only hope for a second season lies in the powers of Warner Bros., who own the series.

The episodes on Book 3 are:

Disc One:

Ep. 17 - Native Son
Ep. 18 - Survival of the Fittest
Ep. 19 - The Pit
Ep. 20 - Curse of Ratilla
Ep. 21 - Birth of the Blades

Disc Two:

Ep. 22 - The Forever Bag
Ep. 23 - Recipe for Disaster
Ep. 24 - The Soul Sever
Ep. 25 - What Lies Above (Part One)
Ep. 26 - What Lies Above (Part Two)

5.0 out of 5 stars Seson 2 Please..... October 6, 2012
I just finished watching this with my kids and I have to say I was blown away. I've watched many a season of cartoons with my children from Ben-10 to Scooby Doo and this was by far the most satisfying. There is a real plot and the writers have taken time to get the audience invested in the characters. In addition, the animators seem to have taken a lot more chances as the season progressed and the final run of episodes have some really imaginative and clever artwork and framing. In particular, the close up framing of the characters faces from the amazing shots of Mum-Ra to the horrified and shocked faces of Lion-O et al are brilliant and very unusual for a prime-time cartoon. My kids were totally gripped and couldn't believe it when I said that there were no more episodes.

Season 2 please...pronto.

It was just great! The final part of this show I love watch. Not only it proves well, but it also ends in a quite good conclusion knowing the character Lion-O is ready to find the last power stone to defeat Mumm-Ra. A very set to 10 episodes drawing you in danger and betrayal:
17. Native Son/18. Survival of the Fittest/19. The Pit/20. Curse of Ratilla/21. Birth of the Blades/22. The Forever Bag/23. Recipe for Disaster/24. The Soul Sever/25. What Lies Above Part 1/26. What Lies Above Part 2
Well, what did I tell you? This is what happens to the show that starts over again. And you wouldn't know a good show if you're watching it. I eventually love the last part of Thundercats. Even a flaw you have to put with is a lack of Blu-Ray refinement. There's not even a second season planned for the show after the cancellation of the entire show. I might recommend this to anyone or a Thundercats fan. Whether or not you'll buy it online, it's up to you.

Thundercats season 1 Book 1, 2, and 3 was a wonderful experience my grandchildren and my Grown children love this series. We purchased the original series a few months ago and my grand children were able to see the difference in their parents Thundercats and the Current 2012 version. We hope this is not the end to this wonderful series of DVD movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another fantastic disc December 24, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is the final disc of the first season release of Cartoon Network's Thundercats remake.

The series is a fresh look at a classic from my childhood. If you're a fan of the original, there is enough loyalty to the characters and plot-line of the first series to keep you happy, while the updates are all in well-needed areas (improved animation, sound, acting...) They even take away Snarf's ability to talk, rendering him a super-smart catlike creature. BRAVO!

This show is like the Firefly of animation. Great story, great action and fun characters. It was taken off the air way too soon.

What a great reiteration of an old series. Unfortunately if I'm correct the series was canceled after this season, although I have no idea why.
