3.0 out of 5 stars Torn, October 14, 2005
Being an avid pheasant hunter myself, my wife purchased this book for me as a birthday present. I normally read McIntosh, Hill, and the like, Spring's approach was ahh, different. I appreciated the tones of anticipation and tales about his dogs, but was left a little cold for some reason. Is it the negative spin on today's hunting landscape? I'm not sure. Well written, yes. One of my favorites, no.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best outdoor book out there......., October 1, 2003
By "kushions" (Grand Rapids, MI United States) - See all my reviews
I read Thursday's Bird in about 2 days, I couldn't put it down. If there was ever a book that summarized how most pheasant hunters feel, this is it. I liked Joel's style of writing so much I bought his other book, "Season of Obsession" and find it equally incredible. A must buy for all hunters, can't wait for more books from Joel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thursday's Bird, May 28, 2003
By G. S. Drake "Gette" (Martins Ferry, OH) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a wonderfully written book on the subject of bird hunting. Joel Spring has pulled it altogether here in "Thursday's Bird" with his cohesive, naturally flowing style of writing. This book breathes the author's everyday thoughts and feelings, expressing the pure enjoyment he takes from being outdoors in the woods pursuing a variety of birds from the elusive, quickly declining population of the ringnecked pheasant to the wily and wildly evasive woodcock in various areas of upper Northwestern New York. Along the way, the reader meets the writer's friends and family which go with him on the different hunting jaunts throughout the season. The human interaction is evident in all the ups and downs, joys and frustrations, these hunters experience...so tangible that the reader feels he is right there with them. You also see the important role dogs play in the search for these wild birds. They evidently take as much pleasure from the hunt as their masters do. It's charming to see the relationship between the writer and his dogs, how they work in perfect harmony with one goal in mind - to flush out the prey and fetch it up after one of the hunters has downed it. I also enjoyed the great photographs which are inserted throughout the pages of the text. A must read for the avid birdhunter or nature enthusiast.
