4.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the overly-hyped - good, but not great., July 25, 2006
This review is from: Thwak Thwak Go Crazy (Audio CD)
First, it is important to know that this band is NOT as great as the other reviewers would have you think. There are some good songs on this album, mostly due to witty lyrics, but there are more just average ones.

Here's some REAL background on Bang Sugar Bang (the product description is mostly false, copied from their contrived history on their website): They are a three-member band out of LA, where they own a nightclub/music venue specifically for like-minded bands. They are almost always on tour, but have been holed up in Chicago recording their latest album with a relatively famous producer. Also, they seem to be trying to appeal to the younger-teen market (just look at their website), but have had mild success as of late.

The reason for their recently doing well IS this album. As said before, there are some good songs - "Machine Gun Song" and "Kill the Radio" are the best on the album, the first for its humor and powerful guitarmanship, the latter for showcasing the vocal prowess of the lead singer. "Sunday Night" is also fun, as it is based off the Plutonian ideal of drinking songs' and is well done.

However, as fun as many of the songs start out, they fall prey to the pitfall of many modern ballads - the songs tend to be repetitive with no progression of lyrics. "Sex Beat" and "Tony" are the lowpoints of the album for this reason.

There is great promise in many of the songs, with only two or three really showing their ability. Hopefully, with a better producer onboard, their next and 3rd alubm will be better.
