Thwonk,
By Roxy (California, U.S.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thwonk (Library Binding)
I really liked this book. It was a good topic for a teenage girl. Even the book did not have a realistic plot every teenager at one time or another has wanted a little being whether it be a cupid or a genie to make there wishes come true. This book also goes to show you that no matter how bad you want love if you force yourself into it the results may not always be picture perfect. Because when a cupid pops into her life she has to make choices about her future but does not listen to what the cupid has to say. When she makes her wish not all the she wants happens. She thinks she has just gotten a dream date with the most popular guy in school but little does she know what a disaster the next few months will be. After things get out of hand she isnt really sure what she wants to do. All she knows she wants is the little cupid back. Will the cupid come back? Will her life take a turn for the better? Will her wish be undone? You have to read it to find out.

A good find for any teenage cynic,
By A Customer
This review is from: Thwonk (Mass Market Paperback)
Thwonk, is an excellent book for a teen who, like myself, scorns ordinary, flouncy teen romance novels (or romance novels period). The story journals A.J. a gifted, but somewhat tortured photographer, who is in her last year of high school and is plagued by several problems many students go through: One, being friction between her fathers pushing for her to enroll in a good liberal arts or bussiness school and get a "useful" degree and her desire to enroll in an art school to study photography. Another, being the common fretting over grades and exams. The last, the one that seems most important to her, the fact that she's seventeen years old and is having trouble holding on to a boyfriend, constantly picking up jerks and players. A.J. sets her sights on Peter Terris, who unfortunately is way out of the question. But when something extraordinary happens and A.J. is given the opportunity to magically wipe away one of the many problems plagueing her, she has to decide whether getting into the college of her choice or patching it up with dad, or getting Peter Terris (the one the most frivilous, but seems most benefitial at the time). Will the wishes be all they're cracked up to be? Bauer deleviers this story with humor and sarcasm any teenage cynic will appreciate.

Thwonk,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Thwonk (Paperback)
Are you looking for a book that is unpredictable, funny and has a romantic side to it? Then you might want to try reading Thwonk. Thwonk is a book about a 17 year old girl, named Alison Jean McCreary, or A.J., who doesn't know the difference between true love and good looks. It's only days before the school's Valentine's King of Hearts dance, and A.J. still doesn't have a date. One day A.J. and her best friend, Trish, were driving home from a basketball game. A cardboard box tumbles into the road, so A.J. goes to see what was inside the box. She finds a torn up cupid doll. "A perfect subject for a photo for the for the school newspaper", she thought, so she took it home. That night, Stieglitz, A.J.'s dog, started barking at the cupid doll. It had come to life! The cupid's name was Jonathan. He explained that he could help A.J. in three ways: academically, artistically and romantically. But Jonathan strongly advises A.J. not to pick romance. She has liked a guy named Peter Terris for a while, but only because he was good looking. Jonathan pierces Peter's heart with a magic arrow. Now all Peter can do is follow her around and constantly praise her. The magic gets stronger every day. One day Peter is so blinded by the magic that he says he loves A.J. A.J. becomes "popular" and her friendship with Trish starts to fall apart. Now she desperately wants Jonathan to reverse his magic, but it is too late, Jonathan is gone. The dance is only a day away, so A.J. decides to make the best of it. She goes to the dance with Peter, but she knows he doesn't really love her, it's just the magic. Trish is still mad at A.J., Peter's getting weird and she needs Jonathan to fix things now more than ever. It's almost time to see who won the most votes to be the King of Hearts; soon the magic will be forever. Will Jonathan come back in time, before it's too late? Read Thwonk to find out. I liked this book a lot because it had a lot of comedy and some romance to it, but it also had a strong moral; know who your friends are, and know beauty is only skin deep.

Love is a battlefield, so are your dreams,
By Asta "Asta" (Shanghai) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thwonk (Hardcover)
"Thwonk" is a novel that takes all readers on a magical ride. Joan Bauer, the writer for "Thwonk", combines fantasy and reality mixing it into a love story. She enhances readers' mind through the thought she put in throughout the book. The main character in this book is Allison Jean McCreary; A.J. for short. She is a typical American girl, who goes to school, achieve her goals, and reaches out for her dreams. She has many dreams that include: getting into a good art school, improving her skills in art, and attracting a guy. During school, she meets a guy named Peter Terris. She's desperately in love with him so far for three years, but there's a mirror interfering with him and her. He never seems to notice her, but her eyes always dazes at him. Everything is just like a simple love process teens are going through until she met Jonathon.Jonathon isn't a normal guy, instead he's a cupid. He can grant Allison any wish; artistically, romantically, or academically. She thought about succeeding in photography for her school newspaper "The Oracle", Peter Terris, and any wish of her choice. What would any teenage girl choose? She chose her love life and Peter Terris immediately fell in love with her and asked her out. She made a wrong turn since everything went wrong. Her academic future fell apart, since she's too into the boy drama. Allison cares for her priorities and she wants to set things straight. "Thwonk" really inspires people to not leave your future behind because of some guy. I personally think it's a good book, though the beginning takes it slow, it'll become surprisingly entertaining when you continue reading on. I would recommend this book to anyone in any age. It's a book for people to understand life. Never give up on the thing that means the world and future to you and never leave behind your dreams because your dream is a battlefield. Never leave behind a man. Never leave behind love. Never leave behind your dreams.

Thwonk,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Thwonk (Paperback)
This is a very cute book. I recommend it for anyone who has had that one crush who you think doesn't even know you exist. That's how it is for A.J. Now don't we wish we all had a little cupid of our own. The thing I didn't like about this book was how AJ found love then turned on it. This book takes a lot of time and understanding to read, I suggest if you don't like to read and just decided to read this book because it was the only one left on the shelf, find something new because this book may not be for you.

A Cupid can mess up your life,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Thwonk (Paperback)
Thwonk is a story about a girl named A.J. who is assigned to take the cover photo for her school newspaper. She is a senior at Benjamin Franklin high school. A.J is also an artist, and brings her camera everywhere. She has had a huge crush on a hunk named Peter Terris. There is a huge dance coming up called the King of Hearts dance. A.J. is dateless and feels humiliated, since the King of Hearts dance is one of the biggest dances of the year. One day she finds a cupid doll on the street. She puts it in her art studio thinking nothing of it, but the next day she finds it standing on the table, alive and breathing! The cupid's name was Jonathan and he gave her an offer that would make her dreams come true. The catch was that he could only help her in one way: artistically, academically or romantically. A.J. decided right away that she wanted Jonathan to shoot Peter Terris with his arrow. Then she would have the undying devotion of Peter forever. After awhile A.J. get so annoyed with Peter, that she asks Jonathn to turn him back the way he was. A.J. realizes that she should be very careful of what she wishes for.I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy, comedy and romance. The author did such a good job of writing the book that it made me want to believe that cupids were real. Thwonk is definetly a book worth reading.

Different, comical teen romance,
This review is from: Thwonk (Mass Market Paperback)
A.J. McCreary, ace photographer, has only two problems: her father's refusal to acknowledge her talent and her unrequited adoration of hunky, popular Peter Terris, foxiest of the foxy guys and boyfriend of evilly beautiful Julia Hart. Suddenly, A.J.'s life is invaded by a tiny cupid named Jonathan, armed with magical arrows, sarcasm, and help for the cosmically confused. Will A.J. learn to look beyond appearances? Or will she be content to "date royalty", no matter his personality? After reading typical teen romances, this is a refreshing change of pace. The story is told with the kind of irony and humor that Joan Bauer is known for, and girls will easily sypathzize with the confused, lost A.J. and her search for truth through photography and true love. I reccomend any book by Joan Bauer(Squashed, Rules of the Road) for teenage girls, and even older ones(my mom loves her books).

Predictable and Irritating,
By Y_E_A_H (Somewhere pretty boooring) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thwonk (Hardcover)
I read Hope Was Here (also by Joan Bauer) and thought it was a well written, sweet book. This wasn't the case with Thwonk. The character, A.J was irritating and got on my nerves from the start. The way she was willing to sacrifice anything to get Peter was pathetic. I read on though, trying to find anything good about this book. I didn't.A.J being a photographer seemed like a filler to add more depth to the character, like something she tacked on to make her seem "smart" and not just some lovesick, foolish girl. Once again it didn't work. There was no character depth and it had a sappy, predictable ending. I'd like to see what had happened if she was stuck with him, not the supposed "new life" she has.

Be Careful What You Wish For,
By
This review is from: Thwonk (Paperback)
A.J. is an aspiring photographer with a great deal of talent. Her father taught her everything she knows, but now that she is in high school he is discouraging her from trying to make photography her life. He was burned by the profession when he was younger and tried to make a living out of making independent films. He realized it was no way to support himself and his young family, so he had to quit and go to work for an advertising agency. He worries that A.J. might be making the same mistake. For her part, A.J. is determined to make photography into her life, but she is currently more concerned with her love life. It seems she is always falling for guys who are wrong for her--guys who don't appreciate her art and don't care much about her feelings. Now she has a huge crush on Peter, who happens to be gorgeous and dating someone else. A.J. wishes she could find a way to get Peter to like her and invite her to the big King of Hearts Valentine dance. She is miserable thinking about her dateless state. Then, out of nowhere, A.J. finds a little stuffed cupid. It turns out the stuffed cupid is actually a real cupid, sent to help her out in some way. It can either help her out in her art, making her an even better photographer; help her in school, making her a better student; or help her in love. Despite the cupid, Jonathan's, better judgment, A.J. chooses to be helped in love, to have Peter fall madly in love with her. But having a boy madly in love with her isn't as wonderful as A.J. had hoped. Peter still doesn't care about her art or her personality; he just cares about being with her every second and he is smothering her with attention. But what can be done now? I thought A.J.'s character was really great. She was talented and pretty confident, and determined to get what she wanted. I really liked A.J.'s interaction with Jonathan, and the exasperation he had for her. I also liked A.J.'s parents and her best friend, who were all very interesting and supportive. However, I couldn't believe that A.J. could be so short-sighted and dumb about her choice. It seems like she should have been able to see what was coming. |
