In this collection of letters written by Saint Francis de Sales, it's easy to see that people are the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Saint Francis' gentle advice and counsel is as appropriate today as it was 300+ years ago. He clearly teaches his correspondents how to achieve holiness in whatever walk of life they find themselves in. Although a few of these letters are written to men and women in religious life, most are to ordinary laywomen (mostly) and laymen. Great spiritual reading!

I cannot live without referencing this book frequently. I love it because it is individual letters and that makes it an easy read to pick up whenever you need it. St. Francis covers everything from pregnancy ("Do not ask from yourself what you do not have"), to peace when thinking about the death of a loved one, ("Think only of purgatory and heaven," and "The world is only peopled to people heaven.") Beautiful and appropriate for any person in any stage of life.

St. Francis de Sales continues to bless the world through his writings. For those who need guidance with everyday matters he speaks in simple and direct form, while holding great compassion for the weakness of men. If one is in need of a spiritual director, I recommend Introduction to the Devout Life. But if you like that and want more, get this one.

These letters are easy spiritual reading. It's just as if he's talking to you. Human nature has not changed in 500 years. There are letters for people in different places in their lives - married, single, young, old, well, sick - even one for a very short lady. Hah! They are all so kind. You can see why so many people wanted to hear from "the gentle doctor" while he was alive. He cared enough about people to write 20,000 letters. The people who were smart enough to treasure these letters have made it possible for us to read a few of them here. You will probably want more De Sales after you read them and can go deeper with Introduction to the Devout Life.

As usual, St. Francis de Sales in his gentle way removes the obstacles to holiness for people living in the world...we serve God by doing what He put us here to do and doing it as well as we can. A really wonderful read, inspiring and up lifting.

Saint Francis de Sales is a Master of souls with the everyday problems in life as well as the very difficult cases which we all have at times. Highly recommended to all no matter what one's creed! These writings will bring you through the seemingly impossible pains created by ourselves as well as others, so let's first admit we need help in this life, and then find it in sources such as this one.

Exerpted letters from the saint to people who wrote him looking for advice. Straight forward advice was given to them.

I had such high hopes for this book and wanted to be able to emulate the thoughts of St.Francis de Sales in some of my own letters to people in need. However, I imagined that the language would be a BIT archaic and hard to grasp over the centuries of translations, but I had no idea just how much I'd be totally unable to relate to his thoughts. I'm sorry I spent the money for this item and don't feel up to preparing it for a return; it came as part of a larger package and it's too cumbersome for my arthritic hands to manage. I'll donate it to my Parish Library at Church.
