4.0 out of 5 stars Very good -- but not perfect, March 13, 2005
By
This review is from: Thyroid Cancer: A Guide for Patients (Paperback)
My wife was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer and I bought this book to learn more about her disease. The book is well written and understandable to the layman and it accomplished almost everything I had hoped for.

There are, however, a few minor issues. First, the book was written by a number of different people and it could be better organized. It is frequently repetitive.

Second, and more important at least to me, I found a great deal of useful information about various aspects of thyroid cancer -- detection, surgery, ablation, and long term treatment -- but they were poorly tied together and did not give me an overall view of the progress of things. I was often left to figure out what sequence things happen in and how they affect each other.

Finally, and possibly most important, the book is written for the cancer patient and does not address caregiver's issues at all. Although as a caregiver, I need to understand patient concerns and problems, I have my own issues to deal with and I was hoping for some help. I'm still looking for that help.

In summary -- if you or someone close to you has thyroid cancer -- this book is essential and very worthwhile. Just don't expect it to be perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource, November 4, 2004

This book is a fabulous resource for people who have thyroid cancer. It is also very useful for their caregivers. Although there is some technical information, most of the book is geared to the lay person with medical jargon explained in lay terms. The book details various surgeries, treatments, tests and testing procedures necessary for patients. If you ever have a question about what you need to do to get through the journey that begins with the diagnosis of thyroid cancer this is the place to get your answers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Throid Cancer: A Guide for Patients, August 3, 2005

This review is from: Thyroid Cancer: A Guide for Patients (Paperback)
This is a great book for anyone going through Thyroid Cancer surgery and treatments. I bought 3 books, one for myself and one each for my parents. My family had a lot of question about the cancer and treatment. When you're post-op and hypothyroid it's difficult to explain over and over what is happening to you. My mother found that the book was very easy for her to understand and it answered her questions regarding the cancer and treatments. I found that it was very useful while going through the surgeries and treatments as a reference book. The book answered a lot of my questions. I learned about the book through the Thyroid Cancer Survivors' website www.ThyCa.org. Using both the book and the website helped me get through it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must -have for those in need to know, highly recommended, February 8, 2006

If you were confused by the bombardment of info your endo piled onto you upon your diagnosis, this is the book to sort things out and--most importantly--take the fear of the unkown away.

Information is key, and information in an easily read and understood format is what you get with this book. You don't need to sit down and read it cover to cover, in fact, the book does not recommend that you do that, but it's there to answer specific questions you will have, not just now, but at any time in the years to come.

Someone commented that the book does not addess the fears and concerns of family members. I think it does, since the fears of the patient aren't all that different from those of close family members. At least that has been my experience from now both sides of the fence. And the book lists contact info for support groups both online and in major cities across the country.

If you're reading this review, clearly you're not someone who sticks his or her head in the sand, and that tells me that you will greatly benefit from this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference, January 2, 2006

This review is from: Thyroid Cancer: A Guide for Patients (Paperback)
My wife recently was diagnosed with follicular neoplasm and will be having her surgery on 1/10/2006. I hastily ordered a number of books to get educated, and this is the best I've read.

It contains not only medical/technical treatments of the subject by various experts, but it also contains the experiences of thyroid cancer patients/survivors, which helps me as a caretaker to anticipate potential emotional challenges both my wife & myself will be facing.

I would have given a 5 star rating if pictures/illustrations were provided.

This is a great book for someone recently diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. It covers just about everything and answers many questions you may have and doctors don't have time or the inclination to answer. I think it's valuable in providing you with basic knowledge of this disease, so you can talk to your endocrinologist and become an active participant in your treatment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Anyone Facing Thyroid Cancer, March 25, 2006
This review is from: Thyroid Cancer: A Guide for Patients (Paperback)
I found this book to be extremely helpful in understanding all aspects of thyroid cancer. It is well organized and very reader friendly, especially for those of us without a medical background. The best part is that you can use it as a reference guide during all stages of this disease: pre-surgery, during treatment and follow-up.

I love this book. I was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer and a friend who is also a survivor recommended it. It is organized and very easy to read. It explains things well and is easy to understand. I highly recommend it to anyone going through this difficult time. It also helped my husband better understand what to expect and how to help me. Great purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars traveling this road of thyroid cancer with complete directions!, April 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

The day my endocrinologist informed me of my thyroid cancer, he instructed me to order Dr. Van Nostrand's book...my doctor wanted me to be as educated about my cancer as possible. It was frightening reading at times until I had my surgery and knew exactly what I was dealing with, but such is the fear and dread of cancer. For the fear, I turned that all over to God! Dr. Van Nostrand's book is written in a way that I could understand...detailed and thorough-everything I needed to know and expect. My doctor even quizzed me during my surgery follow-up appointment and wanted to know what therapy I thought Dr. Van Nostrand would recommend...I passed with flying colors! Thanks for writing this book to help me travel this road of thyroid cancer with complete directions! I recommend it for anyone finding themselves on this same path.

It was a very readable book and answered a lot of questions. More importantly, it gave a lot of information to help someone formulate a good list of questions to take to a doctor.
