I'm so glad I waited for the Tivo Roamio. It really improves my antenna only, no cable TV. (I use a Leaf antenna available from Amazon.)

Improvements over the Premier include built in Wi-Fi which was very easy to setup. Once the Wi-Fi was connected, the Roamio updated the system software and downloaded the TV schedule for my zip code. I also watch a lot of Netflix and Hulu Plus, occasionally download movies from Amazon, and listen to Pandora. All are supported by the new Tivo Roamio, so I moved my Roku 3 to the bedroom. While the Tivo Roamio will allow you to access Amazon video on demand, it does not support Amazon Prime Instant Video which would have been nice, but isn't a big deal for me. Overall, setup was easy and took about 45 minutes, primarily due to downloading system updates and the TV schedule data.

The Tivo Roamio requires a service subscription from Tivo, about $15 monthly. Tivo doesn't work without a subscription nor will it work without an Internet connection. If you use it with your cable TV, you will also need a cable card from your cable company.

Delivery by Amazon Prime two day shipping was as advertised...no problems.

I'd been thinking of getting rid of my $155 cable bill for some time now. The Roamio looked like a great solution to making the cut and going OTA while retaining DVR, 4 tuners and channel guide services. So, we made the jump and we cut the cable cord (well, at least for the cable TV services, we still have the broadband). So far, no regrets. We have a good selection of OTA channels locally including all the broadcast networks and several sub-channels. There is even something called ION TV which I'd never heard of until we went OTA, its not on our cable. At one time, the station broadcast UPN, but they ended up being ION and has 5 sub-channels.

We fill in any gaps in what we want to watch with Netflix and Amazon. Its great being able to do almost everything from one box with one remote, though we still have to use the TV remote to use the TV's Amazon app for Amazon Prime since its MIA on the Tivo. Would love to see Amazon Prime on the Tivo, but not a showstopper.

We also bought a Mini to give us an extension to the TV in the master bedroom. Works great since the latest update and Netflix is running on it now.

So with the cost for the Tivo service and Netflix, we have dropped our monthly bill from $155 to about $30 (I don't include Amazon Prime in the cost because I got it originally for the 2-day free shipping anyways, and the free streaming is a bonus to me). We will use the public library (free) and Redbox (cheap) for most of our newer movie needs, and throw in some Amazon streaming rentals for watching when we haven't picked anything up and don't feel like driving down the road to the Redbox. The Amazon rental probably comes out cheaper anyways if I have to make an extra trip and crank up my Hemi.

I picked up a base Roamio box yesterday to replace my current 2-Tuner Premiere which is currently connected to an Mohu Leaf Ultimate Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna. My current condominium has an exclusive deal with satellite provider DIRECTV and I'm unable to get cable television. For anyone new to the TiVo world, I highly recommend the Roamio as an entry-level box for OTA or CableCARD television. The upgraded TiVo TCD848000 Roamio Plus HD DVR or TiVo TCD840300 Roamio Pro HD DVR offer some advantages over the base Roamio but don't support OTA. The Roamio supports Whole Home / MultiRoom on up to 8 thin-client TiVo TCDA92000 TiVo Mini boxes to extend the Roamio television experience to other TV's in the home. Roamio also supports the TiVo TCDA94000 Stream which currently allows streaming or downloading (non-copy protected) for off-line viewing to iOS devices. I already have a TiVo Stream in my setup so the Roamio recognized that device without any issues. I would not hesitate to recommend the Roamio to family or friends to enable the TiVo experience with OTA television. I would probably recommend upgrading to the Roamio Plus for CableCARD viewing and the Whole Home experience because of the internal TiVo Stream and built-in MoCA.Read more ›

This is a much needed update from the Tivo Premiere. Menus snap on screen with no waiting. Everything seems to work much smoother. Supports Tivo Mini and Stream which the previous Premiere 2 tuner model with OTA did not. 4 tuners is a great upgrade as well.

One discrepancy with the published specs, the unit does NOT have a 10/100/1000 Ethernet port. It is 10/100 only on the base model.

No Component video outputs on the base model either.

The OTA tuner has much improved performance from the Premiere as well.
