This review is from: Tibet: Monks of Sera Jé Monastery (Audio CD)
The ritual music of the Tibetan monks of the Sera Je monastery is the leit-motif of this spiritual journey through Tibetan culture.

The book, which features numerous colour photographs and some very rare illustrations of Tibet and the Sera monastery prior to its destruction in 1959, is made up of three main parts: Tibet (Buddhism, history and the present-day scenario); ritual Tibetan music; and a CD with the texts of the foremost rituals.

The music was digitally recorded in January 1997 by Angelo Ricciardi at the new Sera Je monastery in exile in Southern India.

The texts are by Angelo Ricciardi, Stefano Dallari and Matteo Silva . The introduction is by Professor Fosco Maraini.

A part of the income deriving from the sale of this work will be devolved to the Sera monastery and to the Tibetan Children's Village in Dharamsala, India.

Recorded in early Janury 1996, this music embodies the most sublime moment of a pilgrimage to India under the guidance of a Buddhist monk, Franco Callea, to the places most important in the life of the Buddha Sakyamuni. And so it was, in the Sera Je monastery in exile in southern India, that this material was gathered.

Its importance is particularly meaningful for two reasons: as an historical document, the unabridged testimony of a vocal tradition passed down by word of mouth over the centuries and, for those who wish to know more about buddhism, as an avenue towards spirituality through simple prayers and specific rituals.

The beauty and artistry of the songs and music is poignantly heightened by the ever present awareness of the exile forced upon the Tibetan culture, the source from which they sprang that, despite everything, constantly gives forth messages of love, peace, and tollerance in keeping with its centuries-long tradition.

The openness of the abbot of the monastery and his willingness to allow recordings to be made, the kindness and the smiling faces of those who took part, all the while allowing themselves to be guided by the recording times, were the constant influence in this work expertly and patiently co-ordinated by the young geshe Thupten Lodro who was always ready to solve every problem.

And so it was that in the sacred atmosphere of a "gompa," or temple, one late afternoon, in an almost trance-like dimension laden with the scent of incense and candles, and surrounded by paintings and statues dedicated to the various manifestations of the Buddha, my long-held dream came true. The most gifted cantors of the monastery, both masters and simple monks, were before me smiling like children, shining in an inner light that came forth constantly, simple and humble in their deeply touching humanity.

And then, as if by magic, all the sounds from outside, the cawing of the rooks, suddenly stopped and from the silence there arose the chant of voices and the sound of instruments rising towards the infinite while the last rays of the afternoon sun played softly on the surrounding forest. As a devout buddhist I pray that this record will aid the Tibetan cause and I am grateful to all those who contributed towards its making.

Angelo Ricciardi [producer]
