Product Description

About Malas The meaning of the Sanskrit word "Mala" is "garland." The word for Mala in Tibetan is Akshamala. For Buddhist practitioners a mala is considered an essential tool. Below is a brief explanation about Malas, their purpose, meaning, and use. What is a Mala? From a practical and outer point of view, a mala can simply be understood as a method for counting Mantra recitation. However, a Mala can be a great deal more than just a counting beads. Symbology of a Mala On a deeper level, the Mala represents the Form and Speech of the Deity. It can be viewed as the Root Deity and the entire assembly or mandala of that Deity. For example, if you are doing a Chenrezig practice, the large bead on the Mala represents Chenrezig and the other beads represent the entourage of the Deity. In this view, the Mala is a support for one's practice and can become an object of refuge for the practitioner. How to Use a Mala Traditionally one holds the mala in one's left hand. With each recitation a bead is pulled forward. Symbolically, this represents the "Vajra Hook" which brings forth blessings and virtue. The basic instruction is to use the thumb to move the bead forward. Types of Malas A variety of materials may be used to make a mala: wood or metal beads, seeds, raksha beads (the dried fruit of the raksha tree), as well as precious gemstones or jewels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly nice and, functional, for the price., January 9, 2011

For such a ridiculously low price, I was pleasantly surprised, when I received this Mala. The color is a very dark, moss green, appearing almost black, in low-light settings. It is very well strung and I love the deep chocolate colored, tie-off, at the guru bead. It has good stretch, that would fit wrists of most sizes.

I was hoping the bead carving would be more distinctive, but you will need to look closely to see the details. It is still a nice addition to the piece.

It is important to remind the shopper that this Mala contains only 15, Sandalwood beads, and the beads are of a large size, so it will not fit closely to the wrist. Therefore, it will take some abuse, banging on counters, tables, etc. Since I've just received it, I can't attest to how well it will hold up to frequent use. But, again, at this price...

If you are a Mala purist, you know that the traditional wrist Mala will have 19, to 27 beads. Generally, the smaller beads are more comfortable if you intend to wear your Mala often, plus, you will have more beads for mantra counting and reflection. But, this is a minor consideration, particularly for a beginner, as the use can be modified.

When performing mantras, the type of bead used has some significance. Sandalwood beads have been recommended for performing magnetizing mantras. This is particularly useful for the, 'earth mantras,' whereby you connect with earth energy, focusing on building a positive energy circle around yourself, while discharging the negative.

Whether you purchase this Mala simply for 'Dharma jewelry,' or to actually bring it into your meditative practice, you won't be dissatisfied. It's well constructed and the price can't be beat.

I bought one of these and was a bit stunned by how good it was. It's on good string not necessitating any restringing, it had a pretty little bag it came in (which convinced me to give it to my daughter) and the beads actually smell good. for the price, what more could you ask? I'm buying another one, this one for me.

THIS WAS A GIFT FOR MY DAUGHTER, AND SHE IMMEDIATELY SLIPPED IT ON HER WRIST AND IS WEARING IT AS A BRACELET. LOVELY GREEN/BROWN BEADS WITH TINY BUDDHA IMAGE ON EACH. ONE OF THE LESS EXPENSIVE MALAS AND VERY, VERY NICE.
