Biography

From 779 A.D., when Buddhism became the state religion of Tibet, until 1959 -- when His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama was forced into exile -- the nation of Tibet was unique in the world for its unparalleled dedication to spiritual development. Its singularly beautiful music and art were inspired by, and intended to enhance, the practice of meditation. Great monastic universities ... Read more in Amazon's The Gyuto Monks Store

Editorial Reviews

The Tibetan Buddhist chants on this album had never been recorded until 2001, when Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart brought The Gyuto Monks Tantric Choir to his California studio to record the incredible multiphonics of their sacred rituals. The monks gave Hart permission to overdub their voices, achieving the huge sound of the 100-voice choir as one might hear at their mountain monastery with each monk's voice singing a complete, extraordinary chord. Gyuto Tantric University preserves one of Tibetan Buddhism's most esoteric traditions, training many young Tibetan monks in the spiritual legacy of the Gyuto order. All royalties from sales of this recording go to Gyuto Tantric University. In addition, as part of White Swan's Healthy Cultures, Healthy Planet series, sales also generate donations to the cultural preservation efforts of Tibet House. The world's eyes are on Tibet as never before and these prayers for healing, compassion and peace have never been more timely or more relevant.

Only four tracks in the CD but the tracks are long. The chanting is hauntingly serene and surreal. It is amazing to hear all of the tonalities the human voice is capable of! A must have for those who are into Tibetan chant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gyuto Monks Tantric Choir Chants for World Peace April 25, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Very interesting to listen to as a singer. The voices resonate in an eerie yet calming way that comes from way down deep. I listen to it as I go to sleep at night. I've always fallen asleep before the end. Of course, I don't understand their words, but I would like to think their intentions of nurturing world peace some how come across to me. I am a singer, practice Tai Chi and am interested in the various harmony singing from around the world, including Old Harp / shaped note.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tibetan Chant September 12, 2009
By Bonton

I heard this type of chant on the radio and ordered a CD as I was fascinated by throat chanting. This is a sound difficult to believe is being made by a human. I don't listen to a lot but it is what it is... chanting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this May 31, 2009

I love this stuff. It's best played at a loud volume. I'm going to try it while doing yoga, but it's very relaxing to listen to, and really interesting.
