A rare find,
This review is from: Tibetan Folk Music (Audio CD)
Nearly all the Tibetan music available is monastic music, music which is part of religious liturgies. It is very meaningful, but you really need to know what the particular prayers are about. It is not meant to be crafted melodies. It is sung by monks at that very deep tone, so it is directed to a very specific "mind level". (Someone else described it as sounding like a big Mac truck revving up, but that's not quite fair!) However, the common people of Tibet are rarely heard, and Tibetan folk music is hard to come by. This is a good example of skilled singers (without the aid of hi-tech) of melodies which have a special sweetness and appeal. There are a couple of examples of female operatic singing, which, after I listened to it a few times, I began to appreciate. Furthermore, it is wonderful to think of these far away people (there are photos of them on the label, their cheeks ruddy from the cold), who obviously have to endure an onerous life, reaching into our living rooms! Yes, this musical introduction to Tibetan folk culture is highly recommended.
