This book is historic! It is a history and exploration of the Tibetan tattoos, whose scripts are as beautiful to look at as their messages convey. Tibetan tattoos were really an unknown and a shop in our town has started promoting them. Being interested in ink I began talking to them about a possible Tibetan symbol or something but I had no clue as to why I'd want one; I just knew they looked very cool. This book removes the unknown and my uncertainty. (My only uncertainty now is being about to pick just ONE to start with!) After a background and explanation, the book begins going through several Tibetan options, explianing both the meaning, showing the Tibetan script, AND telling the Tibetan transliteration into English so you'll have an idea of how to pronouse the tattoo you choose. The really cool thing is the very back section that takes popular names (mine appears! And it's the last script in the book... Obviously the author saved the best for last!) and shows you the Tibetan script for your name. Keep in mind, this is not fluff, this is more than 100 pages and the exciting thing is that it's only the first volume.

There is absolutely nothing else out there that goes into the Tibetan Tattoos more than this volume. From placement to meaning, this book not only teaches you but also gives you a reference tool that you will want to follow, not only to decide on your future ink but also to learn more about the ink you see on others. The depth is amazing such as how you can use Tibetan scripts to spell out Zodiac symbols, as well as how to achieve the most artistic beauty to maximize the meaning and wonder of your Tibetan tattoo. Tibetan tattoo scripts appear all throughout this volume and they are beautiful to behold.

Based on the viewable sample here on Amazon, I would be skeptical about the transcriptions of Western names and words. For the name Simon, for instance, she has spelled it in a way that would be pronounced Seemun in Tibetan. And as will probably be obvious, these aren't hand-drawn scripts in the book but rather computer typefaces.

The information within this book can be found online at no cost and I would save your money and just do the research.

...simply not worth the money. The meat of the book is on the first page where there is an explanation of the placement (always above the waist, etc). Aside from that, well lets just say that if this were an iphone or android app with a cost of 99 cents, I'd still be upset about it.

There are no sacred meanings defined or explained, only translations. For this (and actual sacred meanings), one can point one's browser towards the tibetan library and elsewhere and get a wealth of knowledge and information that is simply not covered in this book.

Take a look at The Tibetan and Himalayan Library site for starters.
[google: "THL Tibetan to English Translation Tool"]

Furthermore, there are barely any words of interest being defined. Who chose this list? It reads like a list of words available at that very moment, most of which I did not care about. But, your mileage may vary.

Ultimately, a simple search and some time dedicated to researching exactly what you think is covered in this book can be found online (and then some).

Eleven dollars for this book is offensive. I simply cannot recommend this book to anyone (not even the curious).
I really wish I could be more positive about this book, I was really looking forward to it.

Thanks for reading.
