A wonderful, energetic blend of Cuban Music.,

Had this CD played at my usual Cuban Restaurant and by the 3rd track, the waitress, the cook and the owner started dancing. Passed the CD around and all went to buy it. If had to choose a CD for a party, this will be it. To fully appreciate it, a little "cuban" spanish is advised plus of course, your dancing shoes.

An excellent blend of traditional and modern latin styles,,

Tibiri Tabara makes a great introduction to the Cuban sound along with Introducing...Ruben Gonzalez, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta by the Afro-Cuban All Stars and Ry Cooder's Buena Vista Social Club. I was so impressed by the consistant quality of these tracks that I gave it to 6 friends at Christmas before finally obtaining my own copy. Sierra Maestra was in Toronto on Feb 20th, and I was lucky enough to attend their live performance, which was an outstanding, energy-filled event. Be prepared if you see them live, however. Bring a Spanish-English dictionary or a friend to translate, as no english was used by the trumpeter, who acted as emcee for the group.

It is difficult to find recordings of Sierra Maestra in the US since they are Cuban artists; however this is a recording that can be enjoyed by fans of Latin or jazz or whatever. The music is an excellent mix of traditional Afro-Cuban and Cuban style jazz. The vocals are top-notch with traditional Latin harmonies. It is interesting to note that the members of Sierra Meastra searched for and found many of the old Cuban musicians from years ago and invited them to sit in on some of their sessions. They were found across Havana engaged in such things as operating shoeshine stands. Many had not played in years, but once in the studio, they quickly found their old magic and this is obvious to anyone who listens to the recordings of Sierra Maestra.
