Fun for the kids and their parents,
By A Customer
This review is from: Tickle, Tickle (Board Books) (Board book)
My daughter is crazy for Oxenbury's babies. The illustrations and text are a perfect marriage for toddlers. They can relate to the simple, every day message Tickle, Tickle relates..."gently, gently brush your hair". My daughter's favorite part is "tickle, tickle under there" when she gets a HUGE tickle from her dad or me. a must read.

Tickle, Tickle,

My 6 year old daughter and I love this book. She has regularly checked it out from the public library for the past several years. We have to read it at least twice before bed. She anticipates the last page... and of course, we have to tickle!

I am not a child development expert, so I cannot give the technical reasons why my kids become so engrossed in these books. I can say this: both my daughters have loved all the books in this series (including "All Fall Down", "Say Goodnight" and "Clap Hands") since they were infants. It could be the soft oversized illustrations of babies engaged in familiar activities. It could be Helen Oxenbury's gentle rhymes. We were first introduced to Helen Oxenbury's books when the newspaper ran a list of "Must Have" books for different age groups. "Tickle Tickle" was recommended for infants and toddlers, but my oldest (almost four) still takes them out and stares at the pages. She has now memorized the words and "reads" them to her younger sister. I highly recommend all the books in the series, especially "Tickle Tickle"--a perennial favorite around our house.

I would have liked this book for my son when he was younger, but made the mistake of buying it for him at age two. Though he was slightly amused by the ending "tickle, tickle" it is difficult to hold his attention. Also, since my child does like to spend time looking at pictures in books, it is difficult for him to hear the rhyme because they are spaced out on different pages.
Not for children older than two.

Excellent book for infants,
This review is from: Tickle, Tickle (Board Books) (Board book)
My three month old son LOVES to stare at this book. I believe it's never too soon to start reading to your child and Helen Oxenbury's books seem to be just the ticket. He concentrates on the pictures while I drag out the story. These are excellent, excellent books for very young babies! We also have All Fall Down and I'm going to order the other two now.

Wonderful Read, but Short!,

My son absolutely loves this book. The text is lyrical and the illustrations endearing. My only surprise when we received it was that the book is only 4 pages long! The text consists of one short poem, one line per page. That just means that we have to read it at least 3 times before my son (13mos) has his fill. Also, the copy we received has a white cover instead of purple. Overall, though, this is lovely book, and quite different from others we have seen in its simple charm. We also have Clap Hands and Say Goodnight by the same author, and they are equally lovely.

my youngest just discovered it on the bookshelf and LOVES it. my first three boys wouldn't even look at it, but by god, after gathering dust for a full 10 years, this is suddenly a winner. he studies the pictures, recites every word in the book, and comments extensively on the action. i'm buying the other 3 books in the series right now.

Great for babies,

This is the kind of book parents can use to help teach their very young children to appreciate books. Limited text, engaging pictures, not too long.
My 5-month-old daughter received this book and Say Goodnight as a gift when she was about 3 months old, and she loved them. We have since received the other two books in this series as gifts after requesting them for Christmas. Trying to read a longer picture book with my daughter at 3 months (or younger) was a challenge. She didn't have the attention span and I think the images in books aimed at older children didn't make sense to her (or at least didn't interest her). Getting these books really was a gift because they caught and held her attention. She now is very enthusiastic about story time thanks to these and some other books well-selected for her age group. I can see why these books might not be for all children, particularly those who are older. But for my very young baby, they are just the thing.

ISBN 0027690202 - You should know, before you buy this book, that you'll be required (not by law, although it should be!) to tickle your child at the end. You think that's not important? It's VERY important! It makes Tickle, Tickle a great book for little ones.
A group of very young children play in the mud, get a bath, brush their hair and, of course, get tickled! The first thing that ought to catch your eye is the racial diversity of the kids - it's right there on the cover, and continues throughout the book, with parents of different races helping them. That's a major plus, in my opinion. The illustrations are cute and despite some vibrant colors, have the feel of "gentle" pastels. There is very little text, and not much in the way of a storyline, making this an excellent book for the very young (up to about 18-24 months) and less enticing for older children. And all children will appreciate the tickle you really do owe them at the end! - AnnaLovesBooks

Laugh Every Time...,

My daughter LOVES this book! It's very simple and sweet, but it makes her laugh every time we read it. We often recite it from memory- just for a little giggle. The illustrations are great, multi-cultural representations of cute little babies. We have a stock of these books to give as gifts for all the new babies in our life!
