5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Blue Tides
I bought the CD at concert when it was just out. The recordings are powerful musically and emotionally. The lyrics reveal her deep understanding of human psyche, anguish, despair, and hope. As a man I feel privileged for her to share the feelings in those first 3 songs. 'Texas Blues' is a strong favorite ("out on highway 10 with a cold and heartless moon shining down...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good start
I believe Lucy's one of the best folk artist out there today. Her last two releases especialy are milestones in the genre. This however was a starting point for her and it is evident that she hadn't found her "style" at this point. Make no mistake, the songs are good, but they do tend to be bland after a while. On her next release "Flesh and Bone", she...

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Blue Tides, April 6, 2000
This review is from: Tide (Audio CD)
I bought the CD at concert when it was just out. The recordings are powerful musically and emotionally. The lyrics reveal her deep understanding of human psyche, anguish, despair, and hope. As a man I feel privileged for her to share the feelings in those first 3 songs. 'Texas Blues' is a strong favorite ("out on highway 10 with a cold and heartless moon shining down on me.") 'My Name Joe' brings both laughter and tears. I've given copies to many friends. [Added: I see some later reviewers prefer her later albums. I like the later ones, but rate Tides higher]

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, listenable over and over and over. Buy it!, July 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Tide (Audio CD)
This is one of those CDs you can listen to many times over and feel comforted by it every time. There is a quality here that I don't find on her later albums (which I also love). A certain purity or something. Her songs are wonderful and the songs she chooses by other people are perfect. I especially love the last song, Goodnight, Goodnight, by Cliff Eberhardt. Her version of Sting's song Secret Journey is great, too. The whole thing is full of gorgeous harmonies from Shawn Colvin, who also produced it. If you have never heard Lucy, get this, and if you only have her newer stuff, get this, you need it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cuts To The Heart & Soul, January 29, 2006
By
This review is from: The Tide (Audio CD)
The beauty and emotional depth of Lucy Kaplansky's "The Tide," has always cut right to the heart & soul. Its even more
astounding that this was her first CD. Today, her music & voice are still beyond amazing, but I dare anyone to sample Lucy's version of "Goodnight" on this CD, and not drop a tear or two. Same power for the first track, for which the CD is titled.

And having enjoyed the original CD for so many years--getting this re-issue, with new unheard bonus tracks, is like hearing
from a long lost best friend!

If you've never heard Lucy Kaplansky, this CD is a great place to start--and if you have heard her--well then, I'm preaching to the Kaplansky choir!

"The Tide" is remarkable on its own, but also a wonderful first glimpse to the great Kaplansky music to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eminently listenable, October 22, 1999

The Tide opens with a hauntingly beautiful song, the title track. In track 2 (When I Get to the Border), Lucy's demonstrates that her voice is capable of a resonance and brilliance comparable to the voices of other great folk singers such as Nanci Griffith and Kate Wolf in some of their best work. In this CD, she gives us an indication that she is a true and lasting talent that "the heart does not forget." While there may be few songs on this CD that reach out and grab you the way that Ten Year Night and End of the Day do on her Ten Year Night CD, it does offer a very pleasurable and eminently "listenable" experience. Take it to work or enjoy it over a romantic dinner for two. And let's all look forward to more from Dr. Lucy Kaplansky.

This however was a starting point for her and it is evident that she hadn't found her "style" at this point. Make no mistake, the songs are good, but they do tend to be bland after a while. On her next release "Flesh and Bone", she started to find her distinctive sound that was to become her trademark. All in all a good disc, but you may want to skip over to her later releases.

She has an ability that is rare amongst todays singers, the ability to draw you deeply into her music, to see what she is signing about while at the same time becoming totally relaxed by her gentle voice and soothing guitar skills. Her songs are not only relaxing but very soothing and emotion filled. This is a CD for all those that love restful music that can transport you to other places and times.

This CD is a typical Lucy Kaplanski one. A little bit more "country - like" than the others, but that doesn't matter. Those, who like Lucy Kaplanski will make a good choice with this CD
