Tide Stain Release booster is used with laundry detergent. The pre-measured pacs are great for anyone without a laundry room at home or who appreciates the convenience of having laundry supplies pre-measured.

Ingredients are oxygen-based bleach, sodium carbonate, bleach activator, and enzymes. Oxygen-based bleach turns to hydrogen peroxide and whitens through oxidation. The sodium carbonate is a standard water softener and the activator is included because oxygen bleach requires either hot water or a long time to work without it. Enzymes are proteins that actually break down molecules of fat, protein, or carbohydrates to aid in stain removal. All of these ingredients are common laundry chemicals.

The pacs weigh about 3/4 ounce each so the ingredients are concentrated, although the instructions recommend using two for very dirty or extra large loads. They need to be kept dry because the pouch and the powder dissolve very quickly in water. Don't handle them with even slightly damp hands.

I tested one packet in a triple-load front loader with a normal amount of detergent and cold water just to put it to the test. It was a load of fairly dirty dark clothes but I threw in some whites, mostly dirty tee shirts and old kitchen towels, and light colors, including bath towels, just to see what would happen.

So how well does Tide Stain Release work at getting clothes clean? There was a notable difference in the whites compared to using regular Tide alone. It did not remove old collar stains or underarm stains but did a good job on recent food stains including oily stains and tomato stains.

It also did an excellent job removing odors and the laundry came out of the washing machine smelling vaguely like fruit punch bubble gum. It even removed the set-in, slightly greasy smell from the cotton dish towels. I prefer unscented laundry products but this smell is pleasant and clean if a little too strong in the package.

I would definitely recommend this product to help with organic stains or odors, especially for colored fabrics that can't handle liquid bleach or in areas with hard water. Regular liquid bleach beats oxygen bleach at getting whites white but this stuff does a good job on organic stains and is safe for colors and is better for the environment. Using warm or hot water and allowing the clothes to soak in the water with sufficient detergent and the Tide Stain Release should increase its effectiveness by giving it more time to work.

Our kids are 1, 3, and 5, so between berries at lunch and t-ball practice we have every stain imaginable.

Our Kenmore "Calypso" machine (Toploading, low water usage) is not the most aggressive at cleaning so we typically have to pre-treat everything that goes in. After half a dozen loads we can say that this definitely makes a difference in getting stains out, even without pre-treating.

But does it get everything out? Chocolate ice cream stain with no pre-treat, 75-90% gone, though you can still make it out if you knew it was there. Works better on berry and more common baby food stains.

Seems to brighten colors with no noticeable fading observed.

So, if you want to keep your clothes clean with the minimum effort, these definitely help. If you want to make sure that stain comes out of that new special outfit Aunt Sally just bought for your kids, you'll want to pre-wash and rub it out before laundering.

One caution - these are "Gel Packs" which means that the pack itself dissolves in water. If you were to spill water inside the bag you'd have one big gooey mess...keep out of reach of children and be careful in humid environments.

A skeptic convinced December 18, 2011
I tend to be skeptical of claims that, for instance, a cleaning product gets rid of stains, whitens and brightens laundry. So when I saw this product in the store, I figured that much of the claim was hype (so many products turn out not to pay off as claimed). However, it was not that expensive, so why not give it a try?

To my delight, I found that this has delivered reasonably well on its promise. Some of my clothing ends up soiled and stained. I find that between Oxi-Clean and this Tide product, I can get rid of most of the stains and soiling. After years of frustration, I think that this "double team" does about as good a job of cleaning as I have experienced before.

Why 4 instead of 5 stars? I think that this is an interaction between two products and that the whitening and brightening is not just a result of the Tide Pac. Still, it surely makes my laundry a more positive experience than before!
