3.0 out of 5 stars Does it work better than bleach? July 21, 2010
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This product seems to be targeted at the consumer with a HE washer who has no idea why their washer smells like mildew or gym socks when it's not in use. First, I'll tell you why: When the washer is done with its cycle, there is some water left in a small container below the drum where the water pump is. Also, if you have any loops or dips in your water discharge hose, then water collects in there too. There is usually some dirt or leftover softener or detergent in the water, so as it sits the bacteria or mildew will grow in it until the next time you wash.

Tide's solution to this is to sell you a product that kills the bacteria and leaves some residue that smells good. However, there are steps you can take first if your odor problem is mild that can eliminate it without buying another product for it.

1) When the washer is not in use, leave the door open to let it dry out as much as possible.
2) If you use bleach in your wash, then make this load the last one you run. The bleach in that load will kill the bacteria anyway.
3) If you use softener, try switching to a dryer-based product instead of the washer liquid.
4) If you do not use bleach, buy a bottle anyway and run a washer cycle with no clothes, using hot water and a cup of bleach - do this once a month or so.

If you have a severe odor problem, you could try this product once a week for three weeks as they recommend to see if it removes the odor. Then follow the steps above and you should be OK. If the odor still persists, then inspect under and around the washer and in the waste pipe/trap to make sure there are no leaks or damp areas that never dry out. The source of the smell may not even be inside the washer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent if you don't follow the instructions!!! August 17, 2011
Tide's product falls short of other products, such as Affresh, because the directions state that the powder should only be placed in the "Detergent" dispenser and used on the "Normal" cycle.

The Simple Science:
*It is IMPOSSIBLE to get a hotter water temperature in your Washer than that used during the Tub Clean cycle (despite what other reviewers have said). In fact - only the Sanitary cycle comes close, but it does not run as long as the Tub Clean cycle does.
*If your washer has a "steam" cycle, the only way to get your tub completely clean is to use the Tub Clean cycle!
*You use a Washing Machine Cleaner instead of Bleach because bleach only kills mildew and bacteria. While mildew and bacteria CAN cause your tub to smell, most tubs smell because of the RESIDUE left behind
*HE tubs use less water so the dirt/grime/muck in your clothes gets left behind (resulting in the biggest source of odor

Having said all of that, however, it is possible to modify the directions provided by P&G and, if used CORRECTLY, the Tide product actually (in my opinion) does the best job of cleaning the tub and leaves it smelling fresh longer than any other product!

I recommend splitting the Tide Washing Machine Cleaner powder up into four equal parts (eyeball it). The first part for the detergent bin, second part for the bleach bin, third part for the softener bin, and the fourth part should be dumped directly in the tub. This will ensure that the cleaning solution is used throughout the Tub Clean cycle (at least as much as possible without actually using "Affresh" slow dissolving tablets).

2.0 out of 5 stars May work but not worth it July 27, 2010
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I was curious so I tried out this product. It's supposed to keep your washing machine nice and clean. Having grown up hearing my grandmother's saying "You can't get clean clothes out of a dirty washer", I thought I'd give it a try.

Does it work? I have no idea. I've used it and beyond the perfume smell it left behind, I can't tell if my washer is any cleaner or not. For a moment, let's assume it DID clean my washer... does it do a better job than an empty load and a cup of bleach? I doubt it. I have a standard top-loading washer. Perhaps people with a high effencicy front loading washer - which are subject to mold troubles - will notice a difference.

Now, about the perfume smell. Oh my gosh. Even if I could tell this product worked better than plain bleach, I wouldn't buy it again unless it was an unscented version. I've since run 3 loads of laundry and can still smell the fake flowers. And that's with all of my windows open 3 days running. Yikes! Women who like that overwhelming, headache-causing, nausea-inducing perfume smell may be fine. Those of us who are sensitve to fake smells need to avoid this product.

I've given away my remaining packets. I'll stick with an occasional cup of bleach.

Comes in a fairly plain box. I actually respect that. Don't waste my time trying to jazz up the packaging, instead focus on the product itself. Read more
