I used this book for two summers when I lived on Hilton Head. My job was to drive people around on small boats and teach them about the natural wonders of barrier islands. Since I was a boat captain, not a naturalist, this book saved my bacon many times over. Anytime anyone asked me a question, I'd just grab the book and look it up, and I'd usually give it to them so they could look at the pictures. I recommend this book for anyone living near the coast in the Southeast. In fact, a lot of it is still relevant to folks in the Northeast. Some of the species are different, but the processes are still the same.

What's not clear from Amazon's description is that this book has a unique format. Each page was originally an article in the local paper, so you get one page of info per critter or process. The pages are works of art, hand-drawn and lettered in pen and ink. Any one of them would be worthy of framing. The language is clear and easy to understand, written for laymen but with enough info to satisfy naturalists. In fact, they're so beautiful and well-written that I'm here today to buy a copy for a professor of mine who teaches college classes on the geology and natural history of the East coast. There's nothing in this book he doesn't know or can't look up in a normal reference book. It's the artwork that really makes this book pop.

Don't hesitate to buy this--you won't be disappointed!

I moved to Hilton Head Island about two years ago. I couldn't figure out what some of those little beach creatures were, or how they lived, or how they survived. Very enlightening book from a native naturalist.

This is a wonderful book for all ages to use at the beach to enrich your beachwalks and beachcombing. Beautiful drawings and loads of fun information. We used it on our vacation and even had "shell of the day" challenges.

Fabulous.

My wife and my eight year old granddaughter love walking along the beach and looking for unusual shells. My granddaughter is always asking my wife questions, many of which she doesn't know the answer. This book provides a wealth of information for my granddaughter's inquisitive mind. My wife also enjoys simply reading Tideland Treasure.

Having spent many years for a month at a time on Hilton Head Island, this book was very informative on all aspects of nature and shore life. It is well done and my grandchildren, who cannot read as yet, loved to hear about the beach, birds and dolphins from the black and white drawings and the text. It is accurate and interesting both.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Reference for the Nature of the Low Country, May 16, 2011

The must-have book for lovers of nature who visit or reside on Hilton Head Island. Todd Ballantine's "Tideland Treasure" is THE complete, illustrated guide to the flora and fauna of the Low Country beaches, marshes and maritime forests. As a nature photographer I can't stress how important it is to know as much as possible about the subjects I photograph, from macro close-ups to wide landscapes. Thank you Todd Ballantine for this wonderful, easy-to-read reference and guide. I'm particularly impressed with the quality and detail of the illustrations as well as the organization of the chapters, which are based on the natural components of the nature of this area of coastal South Carolina. For anyone who's visited Hilton Head Island and marveled at the variety and proximity of nature and wildlife, yet wished he or she knew more about the animals and plants being discovered on the beach and in the forest, this is the book that will answer all your questions and leave you with a new-found appreciation and respect for what makes the Carolina Low Country a nature lover's paradise.
