Book Description

HOW DEEP IS A MOTHER'S LOVE?

Newly married to a man of wealth and reputation who's willing to be stepfather to her daughter Abigail, Sara Bonniface would seem to have all she's ever wanted for Abby: a beautiful home, a man to be there for her, and the assurance of a top education for the bright if headstrong child. But twelve-year-old Abby has other ideas, embarking on a crusade to learn more about her birth father. Relentless and computer-savvy, Abby manages to track down and then drag Ben McElwyn, ex-cop and now a P.I., back into Sara's life.

It's the last thing that Sara needs. She's already under assault from a series of mystifying events that have her dreading the possibility that she's suffering from schizophrenia, the affliction that destroyed her own mother.

It's the last thing that Ben needs. He's a lone wolf and determined to stay that way. Him —the father of a twelve-year-old daughter? He refuses to believe it.

It's the last thing that Rodger Bonniface, Abby's stepfather, needs. Headmaster of a prestigious prep school in Massachusetts, Rodger's reputation is pristine. Rich, controlling, and cooly charming, Rodger has surprised everyone by marrying a woman with neither his background nor his sophistication. Still, Sara has great beauty, so they understand. And before her marriage she was a respectable widow, a sympathetic figure— everyone, including Rodger, believed.

Until twelve-year-old Abby lobs that hand grenade into the elegant quarters of the house called Tidewater.

Editorial Reviews

"A spellbinding thriller that is both intense and riveting."
—Romantic Times

"With a flare matching Hitchcock, Antoinette Stockenberg delivers a wonderfully twisted story that is all too typical of what goes on today."
—The Romance Reader's Connection

"Five stars: This book has it all! It satisfied me on many levels. It has a touching romantic reunion, gut-twisting suspense, and wrenching emotional impact. Ms. Stockenberg excels at novels that explore the mother/daughter relationship, and this one is no exception. If you like suspense, romance, and family relationships, all wrapped up in a credible story, Tidewater should make you very happy."
—Teresa Medeiros, New York Times bestselling author

"Tidewater is a fast-paced, intriguing seaside suspense novel of betrayal, deception, family and love. Stockenberg delivers strong emotions, relationships, and sharp dialogue."

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A contrived plot and a predictable villain mar Stockenberg's latest tale of romantic intrigue (following Safe Harbor). Sarann Bonniface, whose mother suffered from schizophrenia, wonders if she too is degenerating into madness when she begins experiencing increasingly bizarre instances of forgetfulness. She receives little emotional support from her rich, controlling new husband, Rodger who is chiefly concerned with maintaining his pristine reputation as the headmaster of one of New England's most prestigious boarding schools or from her rebellious 12-year-old daughter, Abby. Barely aware of her mother's distress, Abby is solely concerned with uncovering the identity of her birth father, and through diligent Internet probing, she discovers that her father is a defrocked police officer, now a private investigator, named Ben McElwyne. Ben's reappearance and his growing affection for Sarann and his daughter is the primary strength of this story, and Rodger's heavy-handed ploy to alienate Sarann from her daughter for his own devious means merely detracts from this more compelling plot thread. Although Stockenberg is skilled at portraying complex family relationships, this novel's weak characterizations and predictable plot will do little to earn her a wider readership.

I love Stockenberg's work.. it is usually 4 stars.. but this one just couldn't get off the ground. I read 2 other books in between this one. But once you get past the middle.. it speeds up very fast.. and the second half is definately worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tidewater June 28, 2001
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Antoinette Stockenberg can always be relied upon to deliver a quality product that will keep you in your reading chair long past your bedtime. This latest gem, Tidewater, has a great plot and is peopled with finely drawn characters, all of whom come packed with their own intriguing baggage - in particular, her hero, Ben McElwyn. I have one word for Ben - Whew! What woman can resist the idea of a scruffy, hunky loner who has carried a torch for his lost love for years? Lucky, lucky Sarann. :) Another particular skill of Ms. Stockenberg is her ability to completely nail the voice of her younger characters; in this case, spunky, rebellious Abby. Congratulations to Ms. Stockenberg for another triumph.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has it all! June 19, 2001
Format:Mass Market Paperback
As a reader, this book satisfied me on many levels. It has a touching romantic reunion, gut-twisting suspense, and wrenching emotional impact. I especially liked the development of the "villain" because it was done so subtly that even I began to doubt my perception of him. Ms. Stockenberg excels at novels that explore the mother/daughter relationship and this one is no exception. If you like suspense, romance, and family relationships all wrapped up in a credible story, TIDEWATER should make you very happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real Thriller! May 12, 2014

This book kept me up late! I hated to put it down once I started it. I didn't go to bed until the battery on my Kindle Fire shut down and I had to plug it in. Finished it the first thing the next morning!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tidewater April 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a really hard book to read. The subject was overwhelming, because it happens all the time. I'm glad that the one night stand turned out to salvage able after he found out about Abby. She sounded like me granddaughter,so much so, I wanted my daughter in law to read this, just so she didn't keep thinking there was something wrong with her evil demon teenager. Ha ha. Thanks for the read, and taking care of Rodger. He really gave me the creeps, right from the beginning.

3.0 out of 5 stars Predictable thriller December 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I hate a predictable mystery. It takes the thrill right out of the story. This book had everything else- great characters, a good plot - but you identified the the good guys and the bad guys immediately. The story-telling was rich and detailed. If you don't like "edge of your seat", "nail biting" suspense, you may appreciate this book more than I did for its other great qualities.

I will try again at a later date, this one just didn't hold my attention. Some times I will go back and read a book like this when I'm in the mood for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like the way she writes. August 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There is something about the style of the author that I like. She tells her story and her description of the towns make me feel I am there. Just simple writing with a good plot. Sometimes I need something to read quickly and her books are that. I have ordered most of her books and I am never disappointed.

More About the Author

USA Today bestselling novelist Antoinette Stockenberg grew up wanting to be a cowgirl and have her own horse (her great-grandfather bred horses for the carriage trade back in the old country), but the geography just didn't work out: there weren't many ranches in Chicago. Her other, more doable dream was to write books, and after stints as secretary, programmer, teacher, grad student, boatyard hand, office manager and magazine writer (in that order), she achieved that goal, writing over a dozen novels, several of them with paranormal elements. One of them is the RITA award-winning EMILY'S GHOST.

Stockenberg's books have been published in a dozen languages and are often set in quaint New England harbor towns, always with a dose of humor. She writes about complex family relationships and the fallout that old, unearthed secrets can have on them. Sometimes there's an old murder. Sometimes there's an old ghost. Sometimes once-lovers find one another after half a lifetime apart.

Her work has been compared to writers as diverse as Barbara Freethy, Nora Roberts, LaVyrle Spencer and Mary Stewart by critics and authors alike, and her novels have appeared on bestseller lists in USA Today as well as the national bookstore chains. Her website features sample chapters, numerous reviews, many photos, and an enchanting Christmas section. www.antoinettestockenberg.com
