wonderful album. pretty much her voice + a piano producing great music. throws a little pop/jazz into classics, yet she doesn't totally profane the music such as so many modern renditions of old favorites do. 3.0 out of 5 stars Merry Christmas, or Something
This is an odd collection of Christian carols, one secular Christmastime song (Joni Mitchell's much-covered "River"), and several other songs with potentially religious references, not necessarily used in the service of religious themes. There's the Rolling Stones' "Shine a Light," and Sarah McLachlan's "Angel," both about addiction. There's "Let It Be" by the Beatles,...

wonderful album. pretty much her voice + a piano producing great music. throws a little pop/jazz into classics, yet she doesn't totally profane the music such as so many modern renditions of old favorites do. (i mean, some of staci orrico's covers seem like they took the old songs, ripped em apart, set em to a bunch of synthesizers, drums, and guitars. not so with allison crowe) she has an incredibly powerful voice, and the piano parts are also well arranged. sometimes, however, she does fall into the pit of going overboard with the "remake" part of remaking the classics. anyway, it is a wonderful album, moving, peaceful, sublime, a fresh breath of good ol' christmas time air, and a should-be classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice!, December 3, 2004
This review is from: Tidings (Audio CD)
This album is a wonderful addition to your CD collection if you have a love/hate relationship with seasonal music. The covers are good, but the holiday songs are where Crowe really shines. I discovered Crowe's "O Holy Night" purely by accident, and couldn't be more thrilled. I play this album at work, and people are constantly asking me who the artist is. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable, January 16, 2005

Absolute perfection. She is one of the rare few who possess a voice such as this - not just technically moving, but there is no doubt that it's her soul singing. Thank you, Amazon, for introducing me to her music. Allison Crowe's voice not only gives me chills but leaves me breathless as well. It's a shame that talent such as this gets so little attention while at the same time we're inundated with singers who can't sing and other such crap. I can't wait for her next album.

5.0 out of 5 stars a glorious, stirring, collection, November 1, 2005
This review is from: Tidings (Audio CD)
Everything works with this song collection. It's the most moving "Christmas" album I've heard in decades.

The versions of traditional songs are marvellous. And with some of these well-worn carols it's not easy being original. Still, Allison Crowe pulls it off, and makes her take on "Silent Night", "The First Noel" and "What Child Is This" instant favorites. "O Holy Night" really rocks.

Crowe's renditions of the secular, rock and pop, songs on the album are equally magnificent. Her Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell interpretations are definitive and she manages to bring something new even to the Beatles songs!

It's a great record year-round and particularly wonderful at this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars stunningly beautiful, November 16, 2005

Allison Crowe succeeds in spectacular, inspired, fashion with this highly original approach.

She's gathered together songs of the season that reflect thoughtfulness and spirituality well outside the standard.

Without the sort of polish normally heard on holiday records, Crowe's natural vocals and piano accompaniment are truly stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Allison Crowe - Watch Her Rise To The Top, February 20, 2006
This review is from: Tidings (Audio CD)
Allison Crowe is on her way. I downloaded some of her music here on Amazon, visited her website and wondered where she had been hiding. Allison's music is soulful and full of passion. If you like Norah Jones, you will love Allison. I hear Allison is working on a new CD. I am betting it will be dynamite! WATCH FOR IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden little masterpiece, May 11, 2006

The versions of traditional songs are very good. I think she has a very good voice. This is a nice simple clean album. It is built on talent and passion. Sometimes it reminds me a little of Cher on the more upbeat songs and a bit like Norah Jones on the softer pieces. This is a hidden little masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deeply moved., March 1, 2007
This review is from: Tidings (Audio CD)
Received this as a gift over the holidays, and wow.... just, wow. Allison's singing is remarkable in a way that is difficult to put to words. There's an essence to her singing, a vitality that you can appreciate only in the experience. It hit me while sitting in a candle-lit living room on a cold night sipping tea with my lover, and finding that we both were suddenly moved nearly to tears by this great CD. (Yes, I'm referring here to the hauntingly good rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah").

The song selection is great (doesn't hurt that Allison's included "In My Life" -- one of my favorite Beatles songs), and this has certainly made it into my stack of favorites. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

One of the most beautiful Christmas albums I have ever heard. You have to hear her sing Angel. Her music will take your breath away. If you like Sarah McLachlan, you'll like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing, uplifting, August 5, 2008
This review is from: Tidings (Audio CD)
Allison Crowe has the most amazing voice I've heard in almost 40 years of concert-going. Her Tidings versions of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, Joni Mitchell's River, The Beatles' In My Life, as well as renditions of traditional carols, such as Silent Night, are definitive and, simply, beautiful. (It's simple music as in pure. There is virtually no production and very little instrumentation apart from voice and piano on this CD.) Crowe's sound is powerful, yes, but, really, it's also the distinctive texture, timbre and color of her voice that makes for the intense joy in her music. Her piano-playing equally is strong and moving. This album is a modern classic. I'm thankful to discover an artist with such immense talent and taste - especially today!
