Easy listening early 70's pop, September 25, 2003
This review is from: Tie a Yellow Ribbon: Best Of Orlando & Dawn (Audio CD)
This trio sang easy listening pop songs, scoring hits in Britain, America and elsewhere with some great songs. Tony had some success in the early sixties, when he had an American hit with Halfway to Paradise (a British hit for Billy Fury) and a British top five hit with Bless you. Neither of those songs is included in this compilation, which focuses exclusively on the trio's music from 1970 to 1974. The trio was made up of Joyce Vincent and Thelma Hopkins, both of whom had previous experience as backup singers with Motown.
Tie a yellow ribbon has become a classic. It was adopted as an anthem for Vietnam veterans and the use of yellow ribbons to symbolize homecomings has become something of a tradition around the world. The practice did not exist before this song was written, so it shows how music influences life in all sorts of ways.
Their other great international hits, all featured here, were Knock three times, Candida, What are you doing Sunday, Say has anybody seen my sweet Gypsy Rose and Who's in the strawberry patch with Sally.
The remainder of this collection includes a number of covers, including Up on the roof (Drifters), You're a lady (Peter Skellern), It's all in the game (Tommy Edwards) and a couple of James Taylor songs (Rainy day woman, Carolina in my mind).
Different compilations have been released in different countries. This British compilation is as good as any you're likely to find. If you like easy listening pop of the early seventies by groups like the New Seekers, you should enjoy this.

Great Selection!, July 8, 2003
This review is from: Tie a Yellow Ribbon: Best Of Orlando & Dawn (Audio CD)
This Import stands out because it is one of the few collections that have the single version of Steppin' Out (Gonna Boogie Tonight), rare single Vaya Con Dios, and LP tracks Personality and Home (B-side to Knock Three Times). Most of their big hits are here like Tie A Yellow Ribbon..., ...Sweet Gypsy Rose, Candida and Who's In The Strawberry Patch With Sally. Missing are Look In My Eyes Pretty Woman and none of their Electra Hits such as He Don't Love You, You're All I Need To Get By and Cupid.
The packaging is the main dissapointment. It has no pictures of the group at all. The only info given is the year of release of each track.

Happy sounds of the Seventies, September 23, 2002
This review is from: Tie a Yellow Ribbon: Best Of Orlando & Dawn (Audio CD)
This collection contains all of Dawn's hits, like Knock Three Times (the very first seven single I ever bought), Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree, Candida, What Are You Doing Sunday?, Who's In The Strawberry Patch ... and Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose?, plus their covers of other hits of the era, like Vaya Con Dios, Rainy Day Man, the Goffin/King classic Up On The Roof and James Taylor's Carolina In My Mind. Dawn were the masters of melodic vocal pop and they really shine on those hits, especially the aforementioned Knock Three Times which is a brilliant piece of power pop. Some of the covers are so-so, but overall this album takes one back to a happier, more innocent era that evokes pleasant memories. Dawn were Tony Orlando and two gorgeous female vocalists, and they certainly made their mark with their particular brand of seventies singalong sounds. If you like pop with personality, you'll love this album.
