The Canon 72 millimeter Soft/FX 2 filter is a highly effective, threaded filter that fits most 72 millimeter cameras and is easy to use and install. The Canon 72 millimeter Soft/FX 2 filter diffuses light so you can soften an image without any drastic changes in color or light. Simply put, this Canon 72 millimeter filter will naturally soften color and lighting, effectively removing minor imperfections such as discoloration or skin blemishes.

The Canon 72 millimeter Soft/FX 2 filter's construction takes selective diffusion to a higher level. Tiny, computer designed lenslets are arrayed within the glass. These lenslets are best understood as small lenses that together form the entire lens. The pattern and arrangement of the lenslets alters light throughout the surface of the filter, not just at the edges (as with the net). This creates the powerful ability to soften unwanted details, while keeping the image in focus.

The Canon 72 millimeters Soft/FX 2 filter is designed specifically to put fine image elements, such as skin wrinkles and blemishes, out of focus while leaving the larger details, such as eyes, sharp and clear. The Canon 72 millimeter Soft/FX 2 filter offers subtle effects, producing virtually no flare from highlights or reduction in contrast. The Tiffen The Soft/FX series is a unique diffusion filter that is specifically designed to give the most pleasing of portraits. This filter has a pattern of tiny lenslets designed specifically to put fine image elements, like wrinkles and skin blemishes, out of focus while leaving larger details such as the eyes, sharp. Lighter densities are very subtle, producing virtually no flare from highlights or reduction in contrast. The higher densities work harder to minimize facial imperfections and provide a more pleasing portrait. This filter is available in differing strengths, the higher the number, the more dramatic effect. Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a closely guarded proprietary process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision metal rings. The ColorCore process allows total control over the color and density of Tiffen filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters.

I previously had a 3x gold soft warm (or something like that) which was over the top, unless you treated it as a special effect. This is unobtrusive and natural. If you are using a very sharp lens for portraits, this will give a natural and less brutal look. There are a range of strengths in this series; for my use this is about right.

I use this on my 70-200 lens for portraits and almost never take it off except in bright sun. It's similar to the Softars I used for years on my Hasselblad but much cheaper and available in many sizes. It has less halation than the Softar in back-light situations which is a plus. Only complaint is the poor quality of the ring; very poorly machined.

this is a standard tiffen soft focus filter. only problem was the plastic case was cracked and Amazon was unable to replace it. offered a discount for the inconvenience. the Filter was okay but its case was cracked.
