5.0 out of 5 stars Hanbo (short staff) martial arts weapon
First rate product. Unusually hard wood (good for a fighting stick). Price was right. Delivery was prompt. All in all, a terrific product at a great price with good service!

2.0 out of 5 stars Just A Sawed Down Jo.
Received this item in a timely manner. However, this Hanbo (36 inches) appears to be a Jo that was roughly sawed off on one end. So, one end of this Hanbo is rounded and the other end is a flat cut with splintering along its perimeter. There is also an uneven coat of paint on the sawed off end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have tool to practice Hanbo-jutsu., June 10, 2009

Those who are involved in martial arts weapons are usually familiar with the Bo, which is about 72 inches in length and the Jo, which is about 48 inches in length. The hanbo is usually about 36 inches in length. The great advantage of using the hanbo is that the length is the same as a police riot stick. The techniques you can use with the hanbo can relate directly to the use of the police baton. The length of the hanbo is also ideal for weapon to weapon practice, such as counters to sword, bo or jo attacks. In my system (Bushi Satori Ryu) we practice with the hanbo rather than the bo or jo. I found this model ideal for not only striking and practicing the sword cutting movements, but one can also perform numerous control holds with this weapon as well. In conclusion, I recommend this hanbo for anyone interested in hanbo-jutsu.

4.0 out of 5 stars Has a very nice feel..., May 19, 2009

I bought this jo to practice Aikido techniques with. I made the mistake of letting my son use it. I will probably not see it again. It has a very nice feel to it and is very solid. It is not to heavy to practice with although I haven't tried to hit anything hard with it. I think it could stand up to some punishment. I have ordered a second and will probably have to order another if my grand daughter gets a hold of this but it will be worth it. If you are looking for a solid jo for practice or defense this would be a good choice. In fact you might want to get two.36" Hardwood Han Bo

I first noticed that it seems to either be a sawed off Jo or maybe even a half of a Bo. But, the darn thing has now begun to curve after a month. I now have a curved Half-Bo. But, I must admit, when the product said Hanbo (Half-Bo) it really wasn't kidding.

On January 23rd, 2011 this Hanbo broke under conditions that are not acceptable. Apparently, it only feels strong but it's really quite weak. I think it's made it out of ash. Though I will say that my training partner had a significantly stronger hanbo and it just could not withstand the impacts of a stronger hanbo; even at 50% striking power.
