Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-Two appealing offerings for beginning readers. One hot day, Big Pig and Little Pig both decide to build their own pools. Although Big Pig likes to do things on a small scale (using a shovel to dig) and Little Pig likes to accomplish tasks on a grander scale (excavating with a bulldozer), they are still great friends. McPhail's signature illustrations fill each page as he once again successfully manages to transfer human emotions to his lovable cartoon pigs. Well-chosen vocabulary and repetition of words make this story a suitable choice for those just learning to read. In Tiger, a little girl comes across a variety of animals before finding her lost cat. Ernst illustrates the story with appealing cartoons in pastel colors. Her uncomplicated artwork invites children to make the connection between the words and the pictures, giving them plenty to look at while providing effective visual reinforcement for the appropriately simple text.

From Booklist

Gr. K-1. A little girl pours food into her cat's bowl, calling him in, but Tiger's nowhere to be found. Is he in the bed? No. The dog is in the bed. In the box? No. The rabbit's in the box. The search continues, adding a frog and a turtle to the menagerie, until Tiger finally appears. The text is perfect for the earliest readers to puzzle out, with the simplest words printed in large, clear type on plenty of clean, white space. Ernst's pastel-colored cartoon illustrations add an appealing, lighthearted touch while offering plenty of clues about the action. This Green Light reader is an inviting offering. Gillian Engberg

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Beginning Readers..., November 3, 2009
This book is short, cute & great for beginning readers. The story itself is only 14 pages & there are only about 3-8 words per page making it a great for K-1st graders. My son is 6 years old & in the 1st grade. He can almost read the entire book by himself. The pictures are really good & the story itself is cute. Tiger's owner is looking for him through this book. Where is he hiding? I highly recommend this book for children aged 4-6.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first independent read, May 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was my five years old daughter's first book to read independently on her own (I was sitting with her on her first round - mostly to be supportive). Initially we got the book from the library, and she so loved it we purchased on AMZ, so we had our own copy at home. (I will probably safe-keep this book teary-eyed after she goes off to college in 13 years - remembering the wonder and pride on her face at accomplishing her first independent book read.) For such an Early Reader this is a good story. And the level of repetitions vs new words is a perfect balance between making the read easy/non-frustrating and keeping an engaging story going forward. Also, we both liked the illustrations beauty and thoughtfulness. I fully recommend this book as a first independent reader.
