Book Description

October 1, 1992 7 and up
When a rumor starts that there is a tiger in the woods, the villagers plan to kill it. Young Lee is the only one who does not want the poor tiger dead, and he wishes bad luck to the hunter who sets out to shoot it. An eloquent tribute to one of nature's most noble, and most endangered, species. Full-color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-- Ancient beliefs and wildlife preservation form the conflict in this beautifully crafted story set in rural China. Rumors abound that a tiger has been sighted near a village and that a famous hunter is nearby. Lee, a young boy, struggles with his feelings as villagers discuss killing the animal for its skin and for meat they believe will make them brave. Suspense builds as the creature is tracked and shot, not with a gun, but with a camera. The hunter returns empty-handed and leaves the existence of a tiger open to villagers' speculation, but he winks at Lee, allowing him to share the secret that readers already know. Double-page watercolor landscapes in softly muted tones form the background for realistically illustrated people and animals. A final closeup of the tiger at ease in the wild is especially effective. The eloquent text skillfully maintains excitement and tension while subtly providing information about tiger habitat and behavior. A fact sheet and information regarding efforts to protect this animal complete the book. A sensitive, thought-provoking story that succeeds in capturing the emotions of a child struggling to balance the reality of survival and tradition with the wish to leave an animal unharmed--a theme that is universal. --Diane Nunn, Richard E. 5.0 out of 5 stars enchanting story about an endangered species, February 1, 2003

This review is from: Tiger (Hardcover)
This beautifully illustrated book takes place in a small village where signs of a tiger have been noted. The culture is accurately portrayed including the immense value of a dead tiger to the poor village. Nevertheless a small boy wishes the esteemed hunter who is called in bad luck. We then follow the hunter on his quest. He tracks the tiger, who more often misses than wins in attacking prey and are reminded that this hunter has a reputation of never missing. The hunter, indeed, does not miss, but the reader is totally surprised to find he hunts with his camera only! As the hunter leaves the village he winks to the boy, and lets him see the camera. At the end of the story is a page of information about this endangered species with things to do to help.
