Such a fun book,
By
This review is from: Tiger Lillie (Paperback)
This was such an excellent book. This book dealt with a woman who was struggling to get her sister and niece out of an
abusive situation. This book was just about the abusive situation. The book also talked about Lillie's struggles with her love life and about her quirky set of friends. They were so fun to read about. And I liked the balance in the book, between something so horrible as abuse, but as fun as friends and romance. I love the humor in the book. I really loved how 6 year old Lillie was envisioning "skeletons in her closet". Samson creates such unique characters in her books. Many books portray characters who are so glamorous. Samson's characters may not be the most glamorous, but her characters are everyday people with quirks just like everyone else. I also loved how she interwove life in communist Hungary into the book, and the story of Lillie's mother's escape from Hungary. The women in this book are remarkable. I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for Samson's next book.

I couldn't ask for more,
By
This review is from: Tiger Lillie (Paperback)
Mrs. Samson's books always undo me in such a way, that I can't review them exactly, but I must try.
First, there was the language--colors, tastes, textures. Orange personalities and mustard silk sentences, phrases that slip over you like a favorite spread. I tried to write down the quotes, but there quickly became too many to count. And there was soon too much story to bother with such things, too much humor and heartbreak. Too much truth, sheathed in just enough grace to cover the hard parts until I could take them. Others have told of the top layer of TIGER LILLIE, a spicy mash sprinkled with the love inherited by the daughter of a blind Episcopalian and the need exploited in her younger sister. It's a tale of sufficient grace, of facing the skeletons, sometimes even the one under our flesh. Between the flamboyant flowers, wonderful gowns and delicious food of the employees of an extreme wedding planning company, rest courageous, kind souls whose collective, quiet love is always on time. Beneath the story rests a mirror, a glassy sea, allowing the light of Christ to refract between the pages. It is this light that brings me here, breathless, minutes after turning the last page. It is this light that brings me back to Mrs. Samson's books again and again. It is this light that draws me closer, for a better glimpse of Jesus.

A breath of fresh air!,

This review is from: Tiger Lillie (Paperback)
This book knocked my socks off. Ms Samson is an outstanding author of everyday people, with everyday problems and triumphs, but rely on the Lord and each other.
We have Lillie, who is thirty-something and not married yet. She runs a wedding planner type of business. She has a sister, whom unknown to her, things are getting worse every day. Her dad is a priest who is blind and is her mentor. Will Lillie ever find love? Will Tacy survive her abusive and controlling husband? Read and find out! This book won't disappoint you, however it will NOT end up like you think!

Gripping read - raw, real, and full of emotion,
By Buffy J. "Buffy" (South Carolina, USA) - See all my reviews

This is definitely an outstanding book! I read it in two nights because I couldn't put it down! I laughed and cried with Lillie and her friends/co-workers and family, as they planned weddings, faced crises, and endured everyday life together. I worried and fretted in suspense about Lillie's sister, Tacy, who was trapped in an abusive marriage with a controlling, misguided husband. I enjoyed every second of the book! I hated to see it end. So don't miss out, read it and be ready to be hooked!!!

I've been a fan of Lisa Sampson for several years, and Tiger Lillie is now one of my favorites. Lisa has a gift of creating characters so real I find myself praying for them! Very real, unique, fun, and compassionate is how I would tag Tiger Lillie.

Magnificent,
This review is from: Tiger Lillie (Paperback)
Like Lisa Samson's other books, this one is alive with multi-layed characters who make you care about who they are as much as where the plot is taking them. The book is voiced by sisters Lillie and Tacy, one outspoken and strong, the other with a voice increasingly haunting as the plot unfolds.
The secondary characters show off Samson's skill as well-- they do not only exist for the sake of the protagonist, but have rich backstories and personalities of their own. This book, alive with the faceted faith and struggles of real people, is neither trite nor syrupy-- in fact, it is bracing and heartbreaking in places. But the ride is more than worth it.

Wow! More less-than-perfect characters from Lisa Samson that are full of dimension and unforgetable! These are people you'd like to know--in fact these people are sooo real, you do know them! So many issues addressed in this book and so well done.

inspirational family drama,
This review is from: Tiger Lillie (Paperback)
Lillie Bauer admittedly a bit plump is in terrific physical shape and is doing well with her florist business. However, her love life seems in the tank as she still moans over her childhood hero and sweetheart Ted, who vanished fifteen years ago just after they graduated from high school. No man has come close when compared to the legendary Ted.
Lillie worries about her beloved sister Tacy, whose spouse Rawlins McGregor is abusive to her and their young child Hannah. Not sure what to do, Lillie receives help from family, business associates, friends, and Gordon, a new man in her life. Still she believes her sibling and her niece need a miracle to survive the increasingly volatile Rawlins. She wonders whether her prayers to God can be answered through the Temperance Church of the Apostles filter or should she heed the advice of her support group by cutting out the questionable middle man by praying directly and interceding with her sibling's family? The tale starts slow, but once the story line boils, readers obtain a deep look at a dysfunctional family, the role of the church, and the belief that there are no atheists in the fox hole. When Lillie realizes the crisis has become dangerous, she turns to God and prays for a miracle especially for the two McGovern females. Told in rotating chapters by the two sisters, fans will see how love and belief offer solace when tragedy occurs. Harriet Klausner |
