Book Description

Growing up at the foot of Mount Everest, a Sherpa boy named Tenzing Norgay dreamed about one day being the first to climb the giant in his backyard. For years he practiced, carrying loads of rocks in his backpack to grow stronger, prowling the mountain's lower levels; later, carrying loads of equipment for other adventurers, but always, always, wanting to climb himself.

But his dream never seemed possible until he met Edmund Hillary, a New Zealand beekeeper who shared Tenzing's dream. By working together every step of the way, two men from entirely different backgrounds climbed into the clouds, to the peak of Mount Everest. However, as the years passed, only Hilary's name lived on in the history books while, in the west, Norgay's was mostly forgotten.

In Tiger of the Snows, Robert Burleigh introduces young readers to one of the Far East's greatest heroes and tells the long-neglected story of a litle boy with an unimaginable dream, who refused to be daunted by the world's most daunting mountain, and who came to be known as the tiger of the snows. Caldecott winner Ed Young brings Everest to life with hauntingly, subtly beautiful animal imageries and resplendent colors, capturing the breathtaking grandeur and life force of the mountain the Nepalese call Mother Goddess of the Earth.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6–A moving tribute to a humble man who realized a remarkable dream. The poetic prose tells the story of a Nepalese Sherpa boy who tended yaks on steep slopes, but who was always looking up and dreaming about the snow-dotted black-rock peak of Mount Everest (Mountain,/Mountain,/Why do you call me?). Norgay traveled to Katmandu, where he Unlocked the secrets of the climber's rope,/Studied the lore of the axe,/And apprenticed himself to death and danger. The poem's climax details the events of May 29, 1953, when he and Edmund Hillary made their final ascent. Throughout, the author repeats the refrain, A song for Tenzing,/Tenzing Norgay, followed by one of the man's attributes (Born to heights, Pathfinder, Quick-footed, etc.), elucidating his life and experiences. Young's hauntingly beautiful illustrations capture the mystery and grandeur of these dangerously high peaks with somber-hued pastels, predominantly blues and purples, set against black backgrounds. While most of the paintings are panoramic, with Norgay shown as a tiny figure, the final spread is a striking close-up portrait of him at mountain top, dazzled by the sun and beaming with pride. A stunning and lyrical ode to a contemplative man and his amazing achievement.–Be Astengo, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL

From Booklist

Gr. 4-6. In this picture-book biography, luminous images and spare, dramatic poetry introduce famous Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, who was the first to climb Mount Everest, in 1953, along with Sir Edmund Hillary. The immediate, laudatory poems move fluidly between the day of the historic climb and Norgay's youth and training in the Himalayas. A reference to Norgay's "simple character" strikes a condescending note, and some readers will need more context to understand scientific references such as "the airless air," in which "arms are tree trunks, / Feet turn to chunks of lead." Still, Burleigh's fluid words evoke the "deep-lunged / quick-footed" physical feats, the danger, and even the sadness that comes when the climbers must return to "the low and dreamless land." Young's pastels capture breathtaking sweeps of mountain and sky in grainy, dreamlike textures that suggest the icy, rarefied air; the elusiveness of the challenge; and the poetry's almost spiritual reverence for the mountain. An afterword closes this unusual, memorable introduction to the legendary figure. Suggest Mary Ann Fraser's On Top of the World (1991)^B to readers who want more. Gillian Engberg

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story. Plus there's another book that complements it!, February 17, 2010
This review is from: Tiger of the Snows: Tenzing Norgay: The Boy Whose Dream Was Everest (Hardcover)
This a wonderful book --written in poetic verse-- telling the story of a boy's call to Everest. The illustrations complement the text beautifully. However, the story takes place in 1953, so today's kids may not relate to the times.

If you're interested in a more modern adventure, here's another book (for kids ages 8-15) about 13 year-old Jordan Romero, who in May, 2010 became the youngest person to summit Mount Everest!

It's called, THE BOY WHO CONQUERED EVEREST. Check it out here on Amazon.com: The Boy Who Conquered Everest: The Jordan Romero Story

3.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful adventure, July 29, 2011
The text of this book lacks something,
how to describe it?
Something basic,
Instrumental,
Something every child needs to learn,
oh yes, I remember.
Sentences.
(Sigh.)

***Dear publishers and authors: Enough with the free verse in children's books. Teach them to read, teach them to write.***

This book describes the great adventurer Tenzing Norgay, a man to admire for his heroism and spirit. The illustrations are simply marvelous.
