Book Description

July 3, 2004

A rare look at a magnificent predator.

Supple, powerful, long, lean and intense, tigers are one of the world's most beautiful predators. Though fierce and efficient, an estimated 5,000 tigers are all that survive in the wild.

Tiger provides a thorough understanding of this remarkable animal based on firsthand observations. Using stunning photography and maps, the book reveals how shrinking habitats and decreasing food supplies are forcing tigers to live in unnaturally high densities, often with deadly results.

Tiger draws on the latest research and extensive field experience to deal with every aspect of its behavior:

  • Social structures
  • Breeding patterns and family life
  • Martial arts-like hunting tactics
  • Dietary favorites and oddities
  • Communication and interaction.

Two hundred and fifty photographs capture tigers in range of activities: devouring prey in the jungle, at play with cubs, warding off scavengers, at rest and on the prowl. Fascinating commentary offers intriguing new ideas about supporting this critically endangered animal, a first step in ensuring that they never die out.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In Tiger, the largest of the big cats is presented in an intimate portrait. Mills examines what makes tigers such superb predators, looking at their prey and analyzing how tigers attack each type. Tiger behavior is both social and solitary, with courtship and mating, cub rearing, and observed differences in sociability covered in different chapters. Tigers are one of the few species that routinely kill humans, and yet fewer than 3 out of 100 tigers become human eaters. Tiger science, population, and conservation complete this very useful primer. Review

Loaded with color photos and scads of information about the habits, character and sadly precarious future of these magnificent creatures. (Globe and Mail 20040821)

Very useful primer... good choice for a general collection. (Nancy Bent Booklist 20041101)

Mills obviously loves his subject... This volume hits the perfect spot between a popular treatment and an overly academic study. (Nola Theiss Kliatt 200503)

A realistic picture of tigers as predators, man-eaters, and species in peril. (Wildlife Activist 200410)

Beautiful... The photographs are stunning and, together with the text, do a great job of communicating Mills' passion for tigers. (Brenda Dillon Resource Links )
