All of Robbens CD's are good to me, but this all instrumental CD is just GREAT! Groovy and funky. You will love it!

Robben Ford is possibly the best electric guitarist around right now. He knows how to do the complicated, techno-jazz schtik but chooses not to and always plays with considerable feeling and heart. It's almost like his solos are telling a story. He doesn't just play a bunch of exotic scales at high speed like some lesser players. And his tone is killer! The rest of the band on this CD are no slouches either, a group of very talented players. The songs are also very good on this CD, IMO; they're not just chord changes for soloists to blast away over. I wish there were more artists around like Robben Ford.

no better Robben Ford than this,
This review is from: Tiger Walk (Audio CD)
There is no better Robben Ford disc than this. On this disc Mr. Ford steps back from his hard hitting blues side and gives us a btter look into his Jazz side. Blues fans don't be afraid. Mr. Ford is still one of the best blues guitarists around and it shows on this disc. If you like great guitar music, the blues or jazz you should add this disc to your collection.

Good jazz album for people who don't like jazz,

First off, I'm a guitarist myself and have been looking for ways to expand my musical ability and interests. Historically I really haven't liked jazz (at least the kinds I've heard) because it is often very unmelodic, has an undefined direction, or the person is just concerned with playing really fast.
A few years ago I heard about Robben Ford, and after hearing a few of his songs, actually kind of liked him. Fast forward to now, where I'm even more open to new musical ideas, and I find myself really liking his music. I still don't like a lot of jazz, but Robben is one of those guys you can listen to even if you aren't into jazz. This is a great instrumental album with some nice guitar work all around. He does use some wah-pedal, but it's not ridiculously overused like a lot of musicians tend to do. My only "complaint" if you want to call it that, is that with jazzy instrumentals, a lot of the songs end up sounding similar to me, or at least I can't remember a definite rhythm or "hook" that you would with a rock or pop album. Now I've only listened to it a couple times through, so that very well could change as I listen more. I'd say if you are a guitarist, get this album. It'll really open your ears and music appreciation. If you're just a music fan, it's a no-brainer, grab it =)

just wanted to throw my 2 cents in and echo the other reviews...i'm lucky to live in the sf bay area, where robben comes to play every year...this is only the 3rd cd of his i've purchased, but far away my favorite...more jazz influenced than the other recordings i have heard, but don't let that stop you...this all instrumental cd really rocks. if you're a fan, go out and buy this cd; you won't be disappointed.

In the Beginning...,

...There was Robben Ford. This is one smokin' CD.Ghosts, and Freedom, are among the favorites I have on this album, just to name a few. As always, Ford's smooth voice and guitar work are exemplary. Glad to see nobody else is trying to step in and sing on his albums unless they're guest vocalists with a career of their own... Peace Out. |
