4.0 out of 5 stars A lot better than these reviews would indicate
Now I'm no EA Sports shill, but most gamers know by now that EA Sports cranks out a better quality lineup of sports games more consistently than any other publisher in the biz. They don't get rich by completely redesigning a game from the ground up. Usually they merely take last year's game engine, tweak it a bit, update the rosters, and pretty up the graphics. And I'm...

3.0 out of 5 stars Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2000
If you've played TW 1999, and liked it, you'll probably be disappionted with the relative lack of improvements to the new version. The graphics are slightly better, however the game play is slower. TW 2000 also lacks: Tiger's aggressive swing, crowd participation, Tiger Tips and jammin' music. In addition there also appears to be a glitch in the software, when you hit...

TW 2000 also lacks: Tiger's aggressive swing, crowd participation, Tiger Tips and jammin' music. In addition there also appears to be a glitch in the software, when you hit a bad shot (ie. shot is hit to the left) Tiger exclaims "Hook!" which would make the shot even worse. This is just one example of the "glitches" I noticed. To summarize: TW 1999 is more exciting and does a much better job of capturing the spirit and enthusiasm that Tiger brings to the game of golf.

The worst EA follow-up since Madden '94. This game does little to nothing on improving the '99 version. The game play is slow, putting is a joke and the crazy sounds and views are out of place. This one only allows one player Tourney play too. I enjoyed the old Genesis version that allowed you and a friend to play a 4 round tourney using all of the courses. Boooooo!

I can't tell you what a disappointment and shock it was to play this game. I really expected more from E A Sports. The graphics are substandard - which only adds to the unrealistic, generic feeling of the game.

You do not get a feel for the course in this game. Some of the more striking flaws of the game are: The ball is bigger than the hole while on the green. Tiger's canned comments wear thin very quickly! Quick inset of hole during putting is very poorly done and again course graphics are very poor

Unless you get a very good deal, don't waste your money like I did. I enjoy E A Sports' PGA Tour for Sega Genises more than this game. If you

And I'm not here to pass judgment on them for that (though people scream bloody murder when 989 does the same thing, but that's a different story.)

So where were we? Oh, yes, Tiger Woods 2000. It is a good golf game, improved upon in many categories from last year, and continues to uphold EA Sports' good reputation within the gaming community. The graphics are nicer than '99, the cheesy blaring horrendously out-of-place screeching guitar tunes of '99 are thankfully gone in favor of the sounds of a real golf-course (imagine that!) The game overall just looks better & more refined, though the game plays very similarly to last year's title, though 2000 has more game modes to occupy your time with. And it's really a good golf simulator, with 2 types of swings to satisfy gamers who like it the old fashioned way (3-click digital) or a slightly new way (pushy analog).

But, not to seem too glowing, there are some pitfalls. I remember the PGA Tour series (EA's golf series for Sega Genesis) having many more golfers than Tiger's anemic "five." And why is it that no matter who I use in the game, it's always Tiger's voice commenting as though he has mysteriously occupied the mind of Janzen/Faxon/O'Meara/Leonard. And finally, I will touch upon what, for me, almost terminally crippled my enjoyment of this game: the putting. I have NEVER, in my many years of video game golf, encountered the sheer TORTURE involved in the putting of this game. The breaks are shown by this bizarre "earthquake cam" that accentuates the peaks and valleys but distorts them so poorly that it becomes like putting in a fun house mirror. And as if the impossible greens were difficult to read, Tiger Woods 2000 makes it possible to hook/slice a PUTT! Normally golf games will let the breaks determine left right, as long as you get the distance down. But here, you not only have to fight the hills/valleys, but make sure you don't HOOK/SLICE at the same time you make sure you don't OVER/UNDER. It is frustrating to the point of ridiculousness.

So TW2000, apart from the putting nightmares, is a stellar golf title. Graphically improved from the previous effort, as well as fleshed out with more gameplay modes and a general more toned-down sense of refinement (use the covers of each game as a metaphor, 99's fist-pumping theatrics VS 2000's smooth sand pitch.) Personally I think EA is capable of doing better, but what they're doing now works admirably.
