Great addition to your PSP library,

Although I didn't dedicate a lot of time to '06 (due to poor control and lackluster graphics), I decide to take a chance at '07 due to decent previews. Tiger '07 exceeded what '06 does because of many little things. The controls, while still slightly awkward with the analog stick, worked much more effectively due to the power meter. Instead of guessing how much backswing you are putting into your shot (which ultimately dictates the power/lenght of your shot) as in '06, the power meter on the left side of the screen tells you exactly how much backswing you are using automatically. As you pull the 'stick' back, the meter moves at the same time. This creates a very intuitive feel to the swing, which worked very well IMO.
To me, control is the single biggest factor when it comes to the quality of a PSP title. Tiger '07 has that taken care of adequately. As for gameplay, the graphics are very sharp, almost on-par (pun intended) with Hot Shots Golf Open Tee. The GameFace feature (where you can customize the physical appearance of your player) does NOT have as many variables nor can you do as much with each attribute as compared with the console version (PS2), but it works fine. The RPG elements used by building you your skills, equipment, clothing, accessory, etc. are all there; they work nicely. Tour mode is where the bulk of the game is. There are only two minigames to speak of, neither of which are all that great, but not a big deal in my mind. All in all, this is a solid golf title for any fans of Tiger Woods franchise, or any PSP-er who is looking for something new to play.

I am a novice golfer in real life, I purchase this game about one month ago because I wanted to know more about this sport. The game is like a golf simulator, it is very real.
You begin as a novice with bad equipment and basic skills (like power or accuracy), then you can earn money and experience, but in the beginning is very hard to beat any golfer, so you have to spend a lot of time if you want to play (decent) in a tourment. Nevertheless in next realeases EA could improve the game with more courses, and with a "training mode" where you can shoot in special situation.

This is a great item for anyone who's crazy about golf and is a fan of Tiger Woods. It keeps my 11 year old occupied while he's not actually playing on the course.

I over played TW 2006 for PC so I was ready for this. I am not a gamer so it took some time to get used to the psp. Now I am a par golfer and started my PGA tour. I am very very pleased and look forward to many months of enjoyment.

The game was extremely fun, for about a week, then after that I just really got bored with the same old crap, and you go through the season, and there isn't a area where you can just improve your stats you have to go through the season and find them there, which would be fine if after playing an 18 hole tournament you barley get any points, around 500 general, but there is 6 different areas that you can get points in, and pretty soon you need over 2000 to advance, which you just wasted all that time playing a season, vs playing a shorter mini game and getting more experience faster. You can play the mini games on the main screen but they wont help your player stats at all, that is a major downfall.

PSP game falls short of the green,

I dusted off my Tiger Woods 2006 game in the spring of '07 and decided that I had done all I could with it. I read the previews and reviews for the '07 version and thought that I would get it to try out the new courses. Unfortunately, not all of the courses listed in the preview are available on the PSP (they are on other consoles). To make matters worse, there are several courses repeated from the last version (do we really need Pebble Beach & St. Andrews on EVERY golf game?).
Most notably for 07 the graphics and load times are much improved. There is a side power meter to give an objective measure of swing strength. But that's where the improvements end. The putting game has been changed to provide a read of the putting line with which you need to judge the swing strength to ensure the proper speed. But the speed/strength result is maddingly inconsistent. I have found that you can only swing at intervals of 6% (i.e., 81%, 87% or 93% strength. The game doesn't read any increments in between). On puts of 20' or more this can be fatal. (I've also noticed that rimming the cup will INCREASE the speed of a put sending you 18 feet on a 10 foot level putt). The mini-game "Putting Frenzy" is ill-conceived. You need to putt as fast as you can to score points which leaves you no time to read the line or estimate speeds. "Putting" and "as-fast-as-you-can" are 2 concepts that go together like fish and ice cream. Once again they include fantasy courses which were created by computer programmers, not golf course designers. The end result is that you have to play each hole in a pre-designed method without having the chance to use your abilities to fade, draw or flop over obstacles to cut strokes. If I wanted to play through windmills and ramps I'd stick to Hot Shots Golf. I really liked Woods 06 and think it to be the best golf game for the PSP. The new offering is the same basic gameplay without enough new content to justify giving it a higher rating. |
