A great, great blues album,

I've been in blues bands since 1985, so trust me when I say this is an awesome -- and unusually cheap -- CD. Kim Wilson's blues harp through his Green Bullet microphone sounds better than ever (literally his best playing since his pre-fame Fabulous Thunderbirds days). The song choices (Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "She Moves Me," for instance) are pleasingly atypical and sprinkled with subtle time-signature twists. But the true high point is the tasteful and unique guitar playing of Duke Robillard, who is simply outstanding. Blues guitarists can learn tons from Robillard's solos -- even on this fairly obscure CD. Also nice is the presence of former Fab Thunderbirds Preston Hubbard and Fran Christina on a few songs. Junior Watson's guitar playing is decent, too. Highly recommended.

I heard Kim Wilson on the radio and decided to buy this album, as I am a blues fan. I was disappointed. Yes it's blues, yes it's raw, yes it has good beat, and the harmonica playing is hip, but overall it's pretty two-dimensional, paint-by-numbers stuff to my ears. Bland white man blues with no subtle nuances. And let's face it, his voice is not great by any means. I wasn't particularly impressed by guitarist Duke Robillard either - he seems to be just going through the motions. Perhaps a good album for a party, but it's rather barren musically. For this style of blues I think Charly & the Nightcats do it better, and Ronnie Earl injects more soul-inspired expression. Otherwise go back to black blues and hear what's missing here.
