Excellent text to ground anyone trying to understand Zen awakening and enlightenment into a practical reality. The Abbott quoted is so humble and down to earth and constantly talks about his failures, and that by recognizing his failures moment to moment, they leave no trace. A good read on the notion of emptiness in everyday life, how you can carry it with you always, allowing you to transcend your weaknesses even while manifesting them.

This is brutally honest and down to earth Zen.

Good introduction to Japanese Zen texts. The pieces are fairly short, but include a decent selection... as someone once said there are no Zen novelists (although whether that is strictly true is another matter! There are only four photographs in the book and I wish there were more since they give a fairly good idea of the flavour. The title comes from an old saying that to get the tiger cub, you have to enter the tiger's cage (very Freudian!)

This is also virtually all JAPANESE Zen. Although the Chinese are referred to in one or two cases, it is is via Japanese sources. Hardened Zen students may want to look elsewhere or even learn to read the originals!
