This review is from: Tigers in Red Weather: A Quest for the Last Wild Tigers (Paperback)
This is a book that was written with great heart and a true concern for the wild tiger. The author, a poet and descendant of Charles Darwin, made a number of trips to the countries that still have tigers (although at this point few people actually see them because there are so few and they're understandably leery of humans). She connected with a number of intrepid people who have dedicated their lives to saving tigers, although it sounds like almost a hopeless endeavor at this point. In between trips she lived a normal life in London, frequently encountering a former boyfriend and caring for her teenage daughter. It's a difficult book to categorize because it combines natural history, environmentalism, animal welfare, poetry, and memoir. I really enjoyed it and got a realistic feeling for what it's like to try to survive as a tiger in the post-modern era of high-tech poachers and human overpopulation.

Such an incredible book. Padel writes a novel like a poem, and captures the essence of the tiger and why it is so important that we save it from destruction in the wild. A must read for everyone.
