Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The third volume of Houck’s ambitious Tiger saga finds heroine Kelsey heartbroken as her inamorata Ren remains a victim of amnesia and can no longer remember her. So she embarks on another quest, this one designed to free man-tiger Ren from his amnesia and find the goddess Durga’s black-pearl necklace. The evil sorcerer Lokesh is determined Kelsey shall not succeed, and high adventure ensues. As in Tiger’s Curse and Tiger’s Quest (both 2011), this story is part action-adventure and part romance. Though not without contrivance, the novel will satisfy the saga’s fans, who will be delighted by the prospect of a fourth volume. Grades 8-12. --Michael Cart

2.0 out of 5 stars Kelsey almost ruined this book January 3, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Maybe Kelsey will turn out to actually be a goddess. That will explain why almost every man, woman, and supernatural being she meets thinks she's so wonderful that she can easily manipulate them.

Tiger's Voyage opens with Ren rescued but suffering from soap opera-worthy ailments: amnesia about his love for Kelsey and having her touch cause him physical pain. Sooo, for the first third of the book we get an annoying back-and-forth of Kelsey and Ren alternatively pining or trying to make the other jealous. Then, FINALLY, we get to the fighting, curse breaking, and dragons.

I keep wishing that the only other female in the series, Nilima, would get to be a full character with more than two lines per book. She's supposedly super beautiful but hasn't held either Ren or Kishan's attention. She could pull an older sister role and tell Kelsey to stop being an idiot and be brave enough to commit to loving Ren. But no. Nilima doesn't get an interesting role. The only real thing she gets to do, for no apparent reason, is to literally fast on behalf of Kelsey's love life.

If only her sacrifice would make the excessive drama stop.

Tiger's Voyage sure has a truckload of drama and tension. But romance? Eh, not so much. Book one dripped with Ren's devoted first love and book two smoldered with Kishan's temptation. Sadly, Kishan loses his bad-boy, sexy, teasing self in book three and becomes Kelsey's quiet, jealous, boring fallback boyfriend. The poor guy is whipped in the worst way.

Sure, Ren pulls some awesome romance while he has amnesia and he does have some swoon-worthy lines after he recovers, but I wasn't big on him switching between hot and cold with Kelsey. Not that her choices help the matter. In this series, Kelsey is the epitome of a confusing girl who throws guys mixed messages. The minute you think she's finally figured it out- bam! She goes against her own heart. Sorry, but being an orphan is not a viable excuse for her irrational choices.

So you may be wondering why I'm still reading this series if the main character bothers me so much. It's because book one, except for Kelsey running away to Oregon in the end, was so much fun! I still love the suspense, fantastic settings, and magic of this series. Romance can be great too, but forcing the tension with love triangles takes away from the love. What's so bad about two characters being together, in a semi-normal relationship? Let me tell you, steady dating doesn't make tension and sexiness disappear.

I've marked my calendar for the Tiger's Destiny release in September. Here's hoping that the petty teen drama will cease and we'll have all the fantasy action with the happy, romantic ending we all want.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wishy-Washy December 7, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I finished Tiger's Voyage, the third novel in Colleen Houck's series, a couple of weeks ago, so needless to say, this review is a long time coming. This book had all the emotional turbulence of the ocean during a hurricane and it brought me mixed feelings - I'm not sure whether I really enjoyed it or I just couldn't stop reading because I needed to find out what happened next.

The story brings another impossible task to the table as it continues with Kelsey's, Ren's, and Kishan's struggle to break the curse that turns the men into beasts. This book began pretty slow, revolving mostly around the personal turmoil between Kelsey, Ren, and Kishan and briefly touching on their preparations to overcome the "dragons." The story seems to be moving its focus from breaking the curse to centralizing on Kelsey's choice between Ren and Kishan. The entire book is filled with this back-and-forth drama as Kelsey continuously denies her true heart.

***Brief Vent*** Kelsey is so unbelievably ridiculous in justifying her decision that I wish I could physically slap her selfish face. She is so hypocritical, acting in the exact same way that she says she despises. I do love, however, how Ren calls her out on her choices and behavior. I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees her childishness, and I hope Ren can one day help her to grow up. ***

The writing style which had drastically improved in the second book unfortunately digressed back to the style of the first book. It was difficult to read sometimes and I'd find myself skimming over paragraphs describing in intricate detail what the group had decided to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in between. I don't know what happened or why the author decided to revert back to her initial style, but the promise I saw from the second book is dwindling.

Which is so sad!!! I love what the story is based on and the history and mythology it revolves around. There is so much research accomplished that the reader can really involve themselves within the mythology and the basis of the curse. The idea is so awesome and the brothers, Ren and Kishan, are such lovable characters - I think they are what keep me going.

As annoyed as I was sometimes with Kelsey and the writing style of Tiger's Voyage, I will undoubtedly read the next book in the series. I can't deny that Colleen Houck has something amazing in her stories - sometimes it just takes a little patience.

After Ren's memory loss following his rescue in Tiger's Quest, Kelsey must work to make the prince fall in love with her all over again if she is going to keep her growing feelings for his brother, Kishan, at bay. Matters are complicated when Mr. Kadam unravels the next portion of their journey: retrieving Durga's mystical pearl necklace located in the mysterious Seventh Pagoda. In order the reach the Pagoda, the group must travel by sea, seeking instruction from the five dragons who know how to reach the necklace. The journey will become increasingly more risky, but not quite as dangerous as the growing tension between Kelsey and Ren as she becomes closer to Kishan.

As is often the case with series, some installments are better than others. This third book in Houck's best-selling Tiger's Curse series is, in many ways, the most enjoyable yet. The characters have already been firmly established and Houck has done an excellent job of acquainting the reader with the setting and ins and outs of the often complicated journey of Kelsey, Ren and Kishan. Although the next phase of the quest to break the centuries long curse is even more elaborate than in the previous two novels, it is also more original and entertaining. The love-triangle between Kelsey and the two princes is really at the forefront of the storyline, and Houck does a good job of creating a growing sense of tension throughout the novel. Coping with Ren's memory loss was an excellent way to keep the romance between Ren and Kelsey interesting. Houck also introduces other characters that compete with Kelsey for Ren's affections and vice versa, adding another layer to the thickening plot. Overall, this third installment in the series greatly improves upon the second, and leaves the reader with a cliffhanger that will surely keep anticipation for the fourth novel running high.

I was a bit hard on the second installment in this series, but was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed this third novel quite a bit. I still find some elements of the story to be a bit on the melodramatic or cheesy side, but I think that, overall, the author does a good job of mixing romance with adventure. I really grew to like Kelsey more in this novel, and think that Houck has done a good job of developing the characters. I am really looking forward to the next novel.

Who is it going to be? or should be?
I have a feeling it will be a Ren and Kelsey ending. I highly doubt there would be all this romantic build-up between them (which I feel has been lacking with Kishan, in fact, his character felt more subdued and "back burner" in book 3 than in any other book, including book 1) and end... Read more

Which Dragon do you like most?
I love the Gold Dragon. Too bad he didn't shout out "Inconceivable!" at some point. Haha!

I can't say that I have a "least favorite" dragon. They all were fabulously unique in their own special way. Such personalities!!!
