1971 found former Fairport Convention lead singer Ian Matthews not only extremely prolific but surprisingly consistent. Tigers Will Survive, originally released on Vertigo in November of that year, is no exception. Featuring backing from British band Quiver (which included Bruce Thomas, later of the Attractions, and Tim Renwick, who played with David Bowie among others). Tigers Will Survive, as was Matthews' style, is a brilliant collection of originals and choice covers (including Eric Andersen's classic Close The Door Lightly When You Go and an a cappella version of The Crystals' Da Doo Ron Ron. Mellow folk-rock jams of the highest order. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

I bought this album as a 'cut-out' 8-track way back in 1980 not knowing what to expect. I thought the cover was cool,but had never heard of Ian Mattews. But it turned out to be one of my favorite albums ever. This album is smooth, but still has some edge to it. 'The Only Dancer' is still one of my favorite songs, and I can't help but sing along every time I hear 'Please be my Friend'. I've bought several more of Ians albums since, but was kinda disappointed. None of them have the same originality and life to them that Tigers does. Just glad they finally put it on CD! My cassette recording of my original 8-track was wore out!

i am waiting for my copy of this japanese pressing I don't know if it has been remastered from the original pressing but this album is a gem The old lp side two is absolutely fantastic Close the door lightly when you go is probably my favourite A must have one And with the original cover even better
